Funding ¥ Refusal The Labour Advisory Committee has recently learned that they have been refused funding to assist in the ‘Worker's Education Programme” at the Nor- thwest Community College. commenting on the refusal, a spokesman for the committee says, “We are disappointed, but we are not surprised, We realized as soon as the austerity programme was announced, that it would be the working people who would bear the brunt of any cutbacks. The only surprising part is that the refusal of funds to the Labour Advisory Committee was dated seven to ten days before the announcement of the austerity programme.” Commenting further, the spokesman goes on to say, “We are naturally suspicious of any so called ‘austerity programmes’, especially those with pre-election plums such as a freeze on oil prices. When all the major cil companies are admitting to a surplus of oil and gas, why do we need a price freeze at an artificially high level? The Liberal govern- ment has obviously decided where their support willbe in the next election, and they know that it will not be with working people. We doubt very much if any of the myriad of government programmes designed to help the major corporations will be cut at all, The only austerity that we will see will be inprogrammes designed for the working people of Canada.” This year marks the 60th anniversary of The Canadian National Lnstitute for the Blind. Youngsters happy Child Centre re-opens The Child Minding Centre in Terrace held their open house reopening last Friday with a number of en- thusiastic visitors, especially the youngsters who got a chance to try out the new facility. The centre has moved from their old building on Olson toa municipal house at 4543 Park Avenue and the . staff spent the month of August preparing the new building for the 200 to 400 children between the ages of one and five who come to play there up to three hours a day twice a week, Although the centre used to be iunded by the federal government, most recently through a Canada Works grant, the Child Minding Centre is now trying to make a go of it as a charitable organization. Because the centre has had to decrease its staff, supervisor Carol Bell and teacher Nelly Olson, are hoping parents will volun- ‘teer their time to help out with the children’s activities. If they can get full parent participation, each parent would only have to. spend three hours every two- months, Bell said. The centre is currently depending on fees, and money raised through various activities to pay rent and salaries. A rummage sale will be held in the next few weeks as part of the ongoing fund raising. died. Another woman was seven months’ pregnant. - _ Friday Draw dates: September 8, 15, 22 & 29.
