Last March, Premier W.A.C- Bennett assured the legislature that no municipality would lose by his new school grant formula. Now events are proving his words false. Seldom has the hostility been so sharp, or the condem- nation so unanimous over the way the municipalities are being treated by the provin- cial adminis‘ration. The Ben- nett government is under at- {ack from all quarters — the Union of B.C. Municipalities, the B.C. School Trustees As- sociation, the B.C. Federation of Teachers, ratepayer and parent-teacher groups, labor and farmers, and the combined political opposition including the CCF and LPP. @ An appeal to municipali- ties to refuse to levy this year’s school taxes has al- ready been issued by the reeve of Saanich, one of the largest municipalities, who de- clared he is prepared to go to jail if necessary. “The time has come when municipal Jeaders must take drastic ac- tion to forcibly impress on our senior governments the financial plight of the muni- cipalities,” said Reeve Ash, as he urged a “province - wide revolt” to bring the Bennett government to terms. @ In the Okanagan, coun- cils at Armstrong and Spal- lumcheen have rejec‘ed school board budgets because the municipal shares are too big. @ Powell River has flatly refused the government’s new apportionment of school costs. Said Reeve Weaver: “The government’s new formula jumped Powell River. tax- payers portion of school costs by $183,000 this year. If Mr. Bennett expects to remain in office. the . government had better reconsider its stand. We're not going to pay that increase, and we’re laying it straight on the line.” @ North Vancouver School (Continued on back page) See BENNETT WCB acts too late for Zucco Mrs. Bea Zucco has started court proceedings against the three members of the Work- men’s Board, after an autopsy ‘report con- firmed that her husband, Jack Zucco, who died April 2 after a long and fruitless struggle to obtain a silicosis pension, had “advanced silicosis.” Compensation She is claiming $12,800 to cover her husband’s compen- sation from 1949, when he was taken ill.
