But I quickly found, when we sat down inside, that his illusions were as big as his body. His illusion is that the socialist peoples of Eastern Europe will re- volt if they get the right advice from the “West.” ‘ I asked who could give that © advice. The answer was—the German Nazis. Big Dick did not give that answer directly. But he told me than one of Hitler’s former high officers was running the “Wooden Church” show. “Our leader is a German bar- on,” said McCarthy’s friend with some pride. “He is Baron Hen- ning von Royk-Lewinski of Bav- aria. He was a member of the general staff of General Rommel in Africa. You must have heard of the Baron when he came to America to launch the Wooden Church Crusade.” Yes I knew of the Baron. I also knew of his fellow staff of- ‘ficer, von Runstedt, who butcher- ed U.S. prisoners at Malmedy. But I only remarked: “I never knew the Baron was a church leader. Will you tell me about his religious activities.” Big Dick was stuck. “Tm sorry I can’t give you that information. But I know he is very sound on the question of Communism.” Andrade would doubtless have found that Hitler was “sound” in the same way. z “Wooden church!” “Why must the churches be wooden?” I asked McCarthy’s “angel.” “Wood is cheaper than bricks,” Andrade replied. “That’s the only reason. But Fulton (Fulton Lewis, Jr., the Crusade’s national chair- man) thinks we can build some churches out of rubble. There’s a lot of that stuff. The Ameri- can bombers were there.” I left Andrade with the convic- tion that the Wooden Church Crusade was a psychological war ih device as well as a “Project X” plan. It gives the Nazis and the Am- erican -McCarthyites a chance to spill their hate propaganda while they are getting the Wooden Church money. And if the churches are built they can give a false religious savor to. the cross-the-border operations of saboteurs and spies . 6 Big Dick Andrade is a symbol of the fascist-minded Texas mag- nates behind McCarthy, fascism and war. ‘ He is one of the lesser “Big Rich” men in the hate -group, however, in spite of his $25 to $50 million. He ranks with such powerful, but secondary, figures as E. B. Germany, the Dallas steel magnate, who helped finance McCarthy’s television attack on Adlai Stevenson in 1952. He does not rank with the Bil- . lion Dollar McCarthyite Trio — H. L. Hunt, the $600 million Dal- las oil man; Clint Murchison, the $300 million mogul from the same city, and Hugh Roy Cullen, the $200 million tycoon of Hous- ton. Nor do Andrade’s gifts to Mc- Carthy or to the Wooden Church Crusade compare with the mil- lions that Hunt is putting into Facts Forum, the McCarthyite propaganda and organizing centre. And McCarthy’s first oil “angel” is much, much smaller than the multi-billion dollar oil trusts like Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. : : The present fascist danger in the U.S. does not come solely from the oil “independents” and other members of the “new rich.” _ -It comes also from the monopol- ists like Standard Oil and the duPonts, who are collectively much richer than Hunt. 9 ; Wes ei I saw that in Houston this win- Continued on next page This widely published cartoon depicts. He ae Senator McCarthy a “great rece and he is an active ber of the national council of Facts Forum. This is the TV aay and radio and political organiz- “ing centre behind “Jumping Joe.” It is financed by H. L. Hunt, the wealthy oil man, who is one of Shivers’ close friends. AFL friends had told. me much about Shivers. He enforces the Texas anti-labor laws against them and is one of labor’s worst enemies. ‘Shivers’ power is based on con- trol of the legislature. He runs this none-too-august body with the help of peefsteak-and-bourbon parties and oil lease bribes from his friends. He has serious Op- position from a strong liberal minority in the legislature, it is true. But he swung the state to Eisenhower in 1952 with money from McCarthy’s : Three’ — Hunt, Clint Murchison, Hugh Roy Cullen—and other oil men, And he paid off many of his friends with oil tidelands last winter. His pal Hunt got 100,000 acres for himself. “Billion Dollar - Not long after my conversa- tion with the CIO leader, Gover- nor Shivers was holding a press conference in the ornate State Capitol at Austin. Shivers was talking of killings —but not of killing of cattle on his Rio Grande ranches. He was | talking of killing every Texas man and every Texas woman who may be identified as a “Com- munist” in future trials. The killing would be done by Texas executioners under a new Texas. law. ‘Shivers said he would ask the legislature—as, in fact, he did—tto pass the new law, fixing the death penalty for “Commun- ists” when he: opened the special session on March 15. McCarthy’s friend aired his bloody plans again at an Illinois Bankers convention in St..Louis. He told the bankers that Texas “Communists should not be allow- ed the protection of the Consti- tution” before they are put to death. He suggested death by shooting. The millionaire governor spoke of these shooting with the quiet enthusiasm of a Rio Grande sher- iff who is cleaning his pistols before he begins killing Mexican peons. ; Shivers was not just voicing his personal bloodthirsty desires. He was speaking for the anti- labor oil men and mine barons and factory owners and cattle kings. He was speaking for the rich McCarthy gang of which he © is a part. He is a member of the national council of Facts Forum, the Mc- Carthy propaganda and organiz- ing centre. And he was indicat- ing what can happen to all Am- erica—as well as to Texas—if the McCarthyites win out in th country. ot e e What kind of Texas men and women does Shivers want to kill? By “Communists” Shivers means trade unionists like Clin- ton Jencks, the Mine-Mill leader, who got five years in a Taft- Hartley frameup in El Paso, while ' I was in Texas. 3 Jencks would face a firing squad if Shivers had his way. By “Communists” Shivers means militants in the AFL’s Na- . tional Agricultural Workers Un- ion, which has tried to organize Mexicans on the governor’s Rio Grande farms. This union gets rough treatment in the governer’s privately owned Rio Grande paper, the red-baiting Mission Times. By “Communists” Shivers means active workers of the CIO Oil Workers Union, which is a power in Texas. The fascists call this union “Communist,” though it is led by right-wingers. Shivers means all trade union organizers, militant Negroes, out- spoken liberals and, ultimately, all foes of McCarthyism. vA PACIFIC TRIBUNE — MARCH 26, 1954 — PAGE 9 | :
