Ai2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 714, 2005 _ Food bank gears up © for another season starting next month ‘THE TERRACE Churches Food Bank is ~ organizing volunteers to sort its first large . batch of products in preparation for its first distribution of the season next month. “We have tremendous volunteers and ..good ongoing support,” said food bank trea- surer Dennis Brewer last week of the prepa- rations. Money for. the purchase comes from a cash reserve the food bank has in-place but it is now soliciting donations to keep finan- _ cially healthy. In support of those donations, the, food bank has signed on to a national Kraft Cana- da campaign, says Brewer. ‘The goal is to raise $300,000 across the country, half raised by donations which will then be matched by Kraft. " The key to the donations is that every dol- _lar raised locally stays with the food bank here, said Brewer. “The amount then gets added to the-na- tional total and Kraft will then match it,” he added. portioned out across the country according to the size of each participating food bank. “What this means is we'll get a percent- age back,” said Brewer of the campaign. He said he estimates the food bank. buys approximately $7,500 of products each month, an amount that does not include di- rect food donations. The food bank’s season begins in Octo- ’ ber and lasts until May but does not operate in December as that’s when the Salvation Army conducts its Christmas hamper pro- ‘gram.. 0. Next month's distribution period takes place from Oct. 17 to Oct. 20. Donations that are part of the Kraft Cana- _da matching campaign can be mailed to The ‘Terrace Churches Food Bank, 4012 Ander- son St., Terrace, B.C. FLOWERS IN MARCH Quinton Freeman Imagine with me a warm March afternoon with beams of sunlight shining’ though the braches of a large oak tree. There are patches of snow quickly melting in the warmth of spring to.reveal green grass and flower gardens that have yet to awaken, but then you look closer and see tiny ‘crocuses pushing though the snow. Fresh green leaves and a vibrant display of color remind you of the bulbs that you planted months ago with the hope of spring. Soon these crocuses tulips, and so much more. This is the promise of spring, the most i impressive and exciting season change of the year. Fall bulbs are an excellent way to brighten up your yard in the spring before any of your trees or shrubs even think of waking up. Don't forget to plant a few extra that you can use for cut flowers to give to a friend or add a splash of spring color.to your kitchen or dining room. Are you planning a winter or early spring wedding or party? You can force your bulbs in pots to Nursery for your free pamphlets on flower bulbs and how to force bulbs. Don’t forget to pick up some bulb food. Bulb food needs to be added 3 times a year for best flower results. Once at the time of planting, next when you see the first sigri of growth, and after the flowers are finished to encourage another year's growth. With winter looming up on us with its cold and you can look for and anticipate with the promise of spring. | _ “Cet Growing” to Uplands!
