NEW COLUMN Land claims old as the Bible ‘BY PIETER HENDRIKS -During the past weeks the matter of ongoing land claims negotia- tions between the federal and provincial governments and the Nisga’a people has reccived in- ’ creasing altention in Terrace. Struggles about claiming and reclaiming land are really as old as the people of Israel. As a mat- ter of fact, long before God had formed that nation, Israel, as He led them out of Egypt through the Red Sea (Exodus 13), God promised Abraham then called Abram), after his separation with ‘Lot who settled down in Sodom, that he and his offspring would claim in time to come the very land he was now gaing through on his way to Egypt (Genesis 12, 13). In time the people of Israel in- deed took possession of Canaan, thereby’ driving put the Canaanites, Hittiles, Hivites, Perizites, Girgashites, Amoritcs and Jebusites (Joshua 3), ‘They claimed, violently and sometimes reluctantly, that land at God’s command, and without negotiations. The Lord God does not need to ‘ negotiate any‘claim on land, be- cause we read in His Word, The View Point 7 Since the time Israel claimed that land in the Middle East the Bible and histery books atike report how that land in the Middle-East has been claimed and reclaimed by a variety’ of (world) powers. Tuming for a moment to the Since the time Is- rael claimed that land in the Middle East the Bible and history books alike’ report how that land in the Middle-East has been claimed and reclaimed by a variety of (world) powers. above quoted Bible text, Ps. 24 1- (the first book of the Bible) clear- ly proves God's ownership of all mankind, we also read in the same Bible Bock that Satan ckverly succeeded in making a Start-with claiming mankind for himself. Adam and Eve, the first two bu- man beings, fell victim to the Ser- pent’s screwed negoliation tactic, as described in Genesis 3. Satan is busy claiming all people for himself, to have them share his final {uture in hell, However, this is fortunately not the whole story. The point we wish to make is that through Christ, His Son, God is reclaiming people for Himself. Christ as resurrected after his death on the cross two thousand ycars ago, He said: ‘All authority in heaven and earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and a wonderful and a very meaning- ful Christmas.
