Terrace’s Peter Crowder shows off what may be ‘the dream of television isolated northern areas. lovers throughout orth may be new | ‘'V watchers heaven It was Horace Greeley who said, “‘go West, young man go West”, while he himself stayed East and made a fortune. Perhaps the slogan today should be, “go Nort yng man and watch The day may not be long in coming when villages such as Telegraph Creek, which currently is truly a TV wasteland as they receive no TV whatever, will be able to pick up 17 or more channels from the big bird in the sky. . “Bird” is what the -communications experts - call the orbiting satellites which are used to receive and transmit television signals to all parts of North America. Thanks to Crowder Communications of Terrace, remote com- munities as well as large centres are able to urchase a Television Receive-Only (TVRO) earth station, and tap into the signals being emitted by the satellites. After the signals have heen received it is a relatively simply technical problem to transmit them either by cable or a small transmitter, Cast of the TVRO unit is approximately $30,000 or less than one month’s rental fee - for a microwave connection between Vancouver and Terrace to carry one station. At a demonstration held Wednesday in the parking lot adjacent to CFTK television, Peter Crowder, .president of, | Crowder Com- munications hooked up a portable TVRO and displayed the unit's versatility by showing the assembled group some 36 different channels all of which use the services of one of the three satellites currently in place above the earth. The audience watched segments of everything from Gilligan's Island on a station in Atlanta, Georgia to the French CBC network rogramming originating in Montreal, The satellites, one of whichis Canadian owned, are placed in orbit nearly 24,000 miles out into Space. This means that they are synchronized with the earth’s motion and so for practical purposes are stationary and can be used 24 hours a day. The signal received by the TVRO is crystal clear when gathered in by the unit. Crowder explained that there is no technical reason why cable com- panies could not use his equipment right now, however since they are licensed by the CRTC there could be some risk of losing a cable license if they went ahead without approval. Crowder Com- munications currently have bids out for projects totalling more than nine million dollars, however, much may depend on the results of a demon- stration which they will make before the CRTC in October “It is also highly possible that we will be fiving a demonstration to members of parliament in Victoria and perhaps in Ottawa,”’ Crowder said. The first TVRO has already been sold and is currently being installed. Although Crowder would not say who the customer was, “‘since it is their business, if, and when, they choose to an- nounce,”’ but he did in- dicate that the sale was to an industrial town in northern B.C. The company has on hand thirty applications for installation of a TVRO and the natives in Telegraph Creek have bepun a fund drive to buy their very own 30 channels. © Mixed reaction to surplus VANCOUVER (CP) — Politicians, Jabor and buginess' leaders have varying opinions on the $140.5 million surplus for the last fiscal year revealed by Finance Minisler Evan Wolfe and some expect it’s a prelude to an election call. In Victoria, the politicians said Wednesday that the figures show British Columbians are overtaxed or the Social Credit govern- ment is incompetent at budgeting. Dave Stupich, NDP finance critic, accused the government of building up its bankroll ‘‘on the backs of the local laxpayer.”” If the surplus “had not been stashed away for propaganda purposes by the government, some 10,000 jobs could have been created by thal money moving in the economy,” he said, Suipich said the surplus occurred parlly because the government shifted a large portion of education. costs from provincial respun- Most responsible sex study states OTTAWA (CP) — A recent student study about sexual and contraceptive attitudes shows many do not engage in premarital sex in- discriminately. Three quarters of lhe sludents sampled said they “approved of premarital sex they felt a slrong affection for their partners; only five per cent approved of sex in a casual relationship in which they did not feel a strong affection, the study said. However, it was em- phasized Ihat since the samples were chosen in a random manner, they are nol necessarily repre- sentative of Canadian youth. But, the study said, ‘‘a feneration gap in sexual values is shown since almost all the young - women believed their parents would disapprove uf premarital intercourse.” Thuse sampled who had nol experienced premarital - sex said they were not op- posed tu having sex but that they were not ready to engage in it, the study said. “The reason given must often by lhe high school females (32 per cenl) was they had not mel a person with whom they wanted to have inlercourse.” The second most common reason given by the high schoul girls and the most common given by the ulder women was they did not feel ready to have premarital sex, the study said. George Juhnsun, president of the B.C, Federalion of Labor, vaid the surplus was shameful and the guvern- ment “shouldn't be taking money oul of the ecunumy, they should be putling it back in."
