Janna Taylor, Parks & Recreatiou Director TO: FROM: Bram Hoogendoorn, Parks Superintendent Director SUBJECT: Large Tree Removal Lougheed Highway There are three options to consider, (but of course there are of course various other options available to us). To cut down and remove about 45 Hornbeam deciduous trees and about 45 Sylvester Pine trees. We would also have to zemove some of the taller upright shrubs such as the Berberis and Broom. These have always been under the other trees and would not look right by themselves. An estimated value of the Hornbeam's alone is $ 24,000. The cost for thi.s method would be $ 8,300. This would include the planting of 152 spreading junipers to fill in the holes and bare areas. This would also control future weed growth. If the trees are cut down there could be a tremendous public outcry. 2. 6" III I III 5 g . Hill II i cost of $ 15,400. 3J,I Hl half the trees, (of both types), especially in front of commercial enterprises. This could create a situation where the businesses on the east side of the Lougheed Highway would also want this done. We could rent a tree spade so that the trees could be relocated at a cost of $ 100 per tree. They could be put around Centennial Pool (which would create a cosier atmosphere; around the new parking lot at Lions Park (which is slated for 1990; around the washroom at Lions Park or around Castle Ridge Park (to remove some of the bareness). The cost for this would be $ 4,500 for rented tree spade, $ 4,800 for clean up and replanting of spreading shrubs and $ 6,100 for digging, planting and staking the trees in the new location. Some reasons ar et 1) The tall trees cr eats a visual bar rier pr eventing people travelling east From seeing the businesses on the nor th side and peaple travelling west From seeing ti.e businesses on the south side. IIA') Ms Jana Taylor, Parks & Recreation, City of Port Coquitlam llllill I 2253 Leigh Square, Port Coquitlam, B. C. Dear Ms Taylor: Please landscape the front of the lacrosse box situated on the school property near Ulster Avenue. Now that Ulster Avenue has been opened for through traffic, this area of the school is very visible and we, the students, staff and parents of George Pearkes Junior Secondary, are embarassed by the poor appearance created by the lacrosse box and the land area in front of it. As you witnessed on October 6, 1989 when we met, the area is in dire need of attention. When the lacrosse box was put on school property, Parks and Recreation agreed to maintain the area. We are trying to be good neighbours especially with the people who have moved into the new developements surrounding us and desperately need your assistance. I would prefer to see an improvement in the lacrosse box with basketball posts and backboards installed in a manner that would not interfere with the game of lacrosse. The box urgently needs some repair and painting. We are somewhat relunctant to use the box in its present condition. I also invision that a landscaped area be created in front of the lacrosse box with shrubs, new grass, curbs and hopefully some blacktop for parking. The parking that is currently present near the box will disappear when we move our portables. If the parking is not a concern to you, then please level, groom, and seed the area in front of the lacrosse box as soon as possible so the unsightly mess is gone by the spring. have included a diagram of the way I picture Ulster Avenue by the summer of 1990.
