NORMA AND FRED KING are now happily retired. They arrived in Terrace in 1973 and hope to enjoy many more happy years here. RETIREMENT Golden years arrive WISHES FOR a happy retirement go out to Norma King. Since 1977, Norma has worked for the B.C, Government Em- ployees Union as secretary and officially retired on Aug. 31, 1994, She first came to Terrace in April of 1973 to visit a niece wha was living here. Norma was immediately taken by the beautiful countryside. When she returned home to her husband in Surrey with news that she had bought some properly at Copperside, Later that same year, both Norma and husband Fred flew to Terrace to have another Jook around. That very same day they bought their original home on Halliwell Ave and lived there until October of 1989, when they moved to their new home on Munroe, up on the bench. ; Fred sold his business in Surrey and Norma left her job at a men- tally handicapped facility in New Westminster to come north. THey. packed ‘up all ‘their belongings and were on the move to Terrace to make their new home, Everything just fell into place, Norma says, like it was ail meant to be. Both have never regretted the : volved history of community work here. She chaired the Terraceview Lodge board since 1980, helping bring it to completion. She also served on the Terrace Regional Health Care Society. In 1989 she ran for alderman for the city of Terrace, losing out by just nine votes. Son Kurt and wife Carrie live at Cultus Lake with their six boys and two girls, a Daughter Kelly and husband . Nonna was born in Vancouver and attended the Queen Alexandra Elementary School un- til Grade 8. - She then went to Grandview High School of Commerce and would graduale to work for the provincial government in the offi- cial administrator’s office. Norma and Fred first met on a day Norma was shopping at a small corner grocery market in Surrey. She left with her arms full of groceries and Fred came along and offered her a ride. Norma remembered what her mother taught her — to never take a ride with a stranger. But on the store owner’s recom- mendation — ihat Fred was OK —— she went home with him. | And guess what? ‘‘Fred was a fast worker,’’ Norma says. One year later Norma Birkinshaw became Mrs. Norma King and that was back in 1953 in Surrey. Fred first worked here at several odd jobs and later went into a plumbing business with son-in-law Jon Greig. He later went to work in the janitorial department at SkeenaView Lodge, where he worked until retirement.
