Rear admiral Robert Yanou (retired) has been made chairman of a provincial commitice which will look into safety standards and op- erating procedures for all B.C.’s inland ferries, The committee will review vessel safety, training standards for fey operators and navigational aids and safety systems used on the erry. Members will include representatives of the Canadian Coast Guard, the B,C.. Government Employees Union and a district marine thanager. The $20,000 was provided by the Ministry of Women’s Equality, uader the women's grant program. The women’s centre’s $12,000 grant will help develop a com- munity planning report on ways to increase educational Op- - portunities for women. “The education project stems out of a needs assessment done in June of last year,’ says Meera Nair of the women’s centre. Education, counselling and support services, daycare and housing — were the needs identified by Terrace women. The coordinator of the current project will identify what kind of information services, training, workforce re-entry and academic programs are needed by local women. The Northwest Band Social Workers. Association. was given $8,000 to organize a three-day regional conference, Called’ '‘Caretakers of the Nation,’’ the. confercnce emphasizes tie role native women can play in climinating family violence.
