Diane English . Vice President, | Terrace Art Association 4 joins CAI Letter 7 ” An open letter to; The. Honourable John Crosbie Minister of Transport House of Commons — Re: Canadian. Airlines: Inter- national in Northern B.C. . The combination of. deregula- - tion and ‘monopoly’ service has “created: an unacceptable level of _ air service _ between. northern British. Columbia .and Van- © couver, The deterioration of ser- vice and schedules has been ac- companied by increased fares. There is an urgent need for you to intervene with Canadian Airlines International (CAI) — - likely including the passage of specific legislation on levels of service and fares in areas such as northern B.C. where a monopo- ly situation exists. . Let me give you an example. On Sunday, Nov. 15, I attemp- ted to fly from Terrace to Van- couver. The return cost of my ticket — Vancouver to Terrace — $354.00, The flight in’ the morning (10:55 a.m.; CAI 627) was cancelled due to weather. (This - was apparently the third morn- ' ing in a row). No bussing to alternate airports was even of- fered. Passengers were re- booked for a 3:40 p.m. CAI flight. This flight was later an- nounced as being late. Prior to the aircraft flying overhead — buses arrived at the Terrace Air- “* port. The aircraft flew overhead and then flew to Smithers to land at 4:17 p.m. . I drove to Smithers for the 6:45 p.m. flight; Others bussed. On the flight to Vancouver which ‘arrived at about 9 p.m., peanuts were served. No other food was even offered. A gentleman in his late 80s en route to Vancouver for surgery - sat near me. He also had been in transit or waiting for eleven hours by the time the peanuts came around. Frankly this is just not on! If this is free enterprise — it won’t sell. We are being held ransom - (Sandspit, Prince Rupert, Ter- Tace/Kitimat, Smithers, Watson Lake, and Whitehorse). We have seen the number of 737s (flights) reduced to the point where it is obvious that CAI is only interested in full planes and tariff rates higher per flight mile than anywhere. (I understand in the world! Per- sonal: communication with a CAl employee). — The kind of “profiting” ona monopoly route is wrong. Sure, CAI wants quick “cash flow and profits. Does that sur- prise you? But to charge more for these connecting flights than for the Toronto/Vancouver route which is five times as long is wrong.
