She acted professionally in Engiand for 15 years. Miss Scrivener has toured in New Zealand as. speech examiner for Trinity College and is currently doing freelance work as an adjudicator and actress. She is also a feacher at Douglas College in New Westminster, B.C. ; FESTIVAL NOTES FOR MARCH 1977 It is very sad indeed that our enthusiastic, newly appointed chairman, Mrs, en Bastin, passed away suddenly rs. Irene Squires has taken over her duties for the festival which is approaching rapidly. 831 entries have been received for 200 classes from competitors in Aiyansh, Hazelton, Kitimat, Prince Rupert, Smithers and Terrace. The demands on the committee members’ free time is great and ad- ditional help for a variety of duties would be most welcome. Anyone who is interested in sharing responsibilities for making this year's Music Festival a success is asked to call Mrs. Olga Power at 635-3833. Tickets for the final night concert will be on gale during the festival from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon daily at the R.E.M. Lee Theatre, The festival program has now been printed and is now on sale, The adjudicators for the festival are: Piano - Edward Lincoln. During the festival, piano competitors will meet at the R.E.M. Lee Theatre from. April 24 to 29. Strings, Vocal, Choral - Roberta Stephen: These classes will be held at Clarence Michiel School auditorium from April 27 to Band, Instrumental « John Murdie: Band competitions will be held at the R.E.M. Lee Theatre from April 23 to 23. Instrumental com- petitions will be held at the Caledonia Lecture Theatre from April 26 to 29. High School Bands from Prince Rupert, Kitimat, Terrace and Hazelton at 8 p.m. on Saturday evening, April 23. Guest conductor be John Murdie, - MR. JOHN P. MURDIE He is a veteran of the music teaching profession with 19 years as director of music at Ottawa Technical High School. He has also been a member of the Music Curriculum Committee for the Ontario Department of Education and a staff instructor at the Ontario ‘Department of Education summer school for teachers. Mr. Murdie served in the R.C.A.F. bands during the Second World War and since then has worked with the National Film Board, the Ottawa Philharmonic Orchestra, CBC television and the CBC Toronto studios. He has been active throughout On- ‘tario and Quebec, both as a clinician and an ad- judicator. Currently, Mr. Murdie is an educational consultant for Ward Music Company in Vancouver. MARLENE SHIER— ACCORDION Marlene Shier studied under Monsieur G. Paradis in Edmonton. She entered music festivals in Edmontan and Calgary from 1951 to 1959 and won the Alberta Provincial Open Championship in 1956. For the past 15 years Mrs. Shier has taught in Prince George where she is the Director of the Prince George Ac- cordion Band Association. ROBERTA STEPHEN — VOCAL, — CHORAL AND STRINGS ; Mrs. Roberta Stephen, B. Mus., A. Mus., A.R.C.T., is a singing teacher from Calgary who trained under Luigi Zanannelli. Mrs. Stephens has adjudicated in the three western provinces and examined for the Western Board of Music. She recently attended a course in 20th .Century Vocal Music in the Netherlands. Apr. 13, 1977, 7 Pacific Northwest Music Festival — . EDWARD LINCOLN — PIANO Edward Lincoln is well known for his radio and ‘television appearances in Canada. Apart from the awards he gained in the musical world he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944. He was a gold medallist in music at the University of Manitoba and during his early years won a number of awards including a scholarship from the French _ government to study with Alfred Cortot in France. He has appeared on the: British Broadcasting Cor- poration and also on the Mutual Broadcast network in ‘ the United States. His radio recitals in Canada / number in the hundreds and include such programs as fhe Distinguished Artists series. He has ad- judicated competitions in both the United States and Canada.
