The extensive Officers’ Re- port highlighted the ten per- cent increase in the Local’s membership in 1965 over 1964, and indicated that there would be a further increase in 1966 as a result of the or- ganizing drive underway. The Report also indicated that the finances of the Local were in sound shape and credited Dell Welder, the former Financial Secretary, with, “safely steering our eco- nomic course through our first year:as a financially inde- pendent Local Union.” The Report paid tribute to the work of the Sub-Locals, notably the Merritt Sub-Lo- cal, which raised several hun- dred dollars to equip a room in the Nicola Valley General Hospital in memory of Mur- ray McLoughlin, a former IWA member who was killed on the job. The Local has plans for an extensive Job Steward and Committee Member training programme, the Report noted, to cover the operations in Salmon Arm. Merritt, Revel- stoke, Blue River, Clearwater and Valemount, The pro- gramme. will provide these key members a broad knowl- edge of contract analysis, fundamental Job Steward training, meeting procedure . and Safety Committee train- ing. Reports were also made by Safety Director Bob Ross and the Ladies’ Auxiliaries of Sal- mon Arm and Vavenby. Financial Secretary Ross, who recently took over as Lo- cal Safety Director, noted in his report that, “it is apparent to all that despite some isolat- ed instances, of excellent pro- gramme and action, the ma- jority of operations have drift- ed into a degree of apathy in accident prevention.” He stated that it was as yet unclear what specific action would be taken to remedy the situation but he and the other safety directors in the Re- gional Council had the prob- lem under study. The ladies in their reports listed the various methods used by them to raise money for hospitalized IWA mem- bers. The reports stated that the activities of the Auxiliar- ies have increased in the past year and more ladies are showing an interest in the or- ganization. The Local Union also spon- sored a Dance on the evening of the 23rd for the members in the Memorial Arena with music provided by the well- known Thompson Valley Boys. Approximately 700 members, their wives and friends attended this gala event. : RETIRED MEMBER Chris Radmacher and his wife Julie were honored at the Banquet for the service they ren- dered the Union while he was Plant Chairman of the Clearwater Sub-Local.
