McEwen’s Column 100 107.87 ee HJALMAR BERGREN Bt JACK HIGGINS Peace action urged by Bergren, Higgins By MYRTLE BERGREN At a meeting sponsored by the Communist Party club held in Parksville on Sunday, May 8, provincial Communist candidates for the next election, Hjalmar Bergren of Cowichan-Newcastle, and Jack Higgins of Comox constitu- ency, spoke on the theme of “There are 832,000 unem- ployed in Canada,” said Hjal- mar Bergren, ‘and this is be- cause we are mainly producers of raw material which gives jobs only in the first and sec- ond stages, not in manufactur- ing, where jobs are concerned. “Our government is spending too much money on arma- ments, $100 for every man, wo- man and child per year. As long as we vote for cold war politicians, the cold war will go on. What we need is a united labor party, but judging from the recent CLC conven- tion, the policy of labor buroc- racy is divide and rule, just like the Conservatives. “When the day ‘comes that the common people of this country are as united as the ones who make fat profits from armament contracts, that will be the day when this situation | peace and jobs. will be reversed in favor of the people.” Jack Higgins: ‘When the rockets begin to fly we are in between and will definitely become the battle ground. There is no defence against it except a policy of peace and neutrality for Canada. “Tt is time that all across Canada people of all political parties should realize that we are all equally responsible, and let the powers that be known that we do not agree with the policy they are pursuing.” Resolutions passed at the meeting urged every effort at the Summit conference for peace, and a cut back in arms spending with the money to go for development of the country. Other resolutions con- demned racial policies in §s, Africa and supported the struggle of the S. Korea people, Soviet space ship to bring flight nearer The Soviet Union took a big leap forward toward manned space flight with the launching Sunday of its giant spaceship satellite weighing 10;000°pounds. The space ship, which has a pressurized.cabin weighing 214 tons, is fully equipped to send back. messages on conditions man will experience in space flights. : Circling the earth every 91 minutes the space ship is in orbit from 194 to 230 miles from the earth. : Hailing the success of the launching Soviet scientists say manned space flight is now months away rather than years. One scientist told Soviet News Agency Tass ‘that, “possibly the great moment of man’s flight into ‘space will come be- fore this year is out.” The tremendous weight of the space ship has astounded : the world. One British scientist estimated that the successftl launching places the Soviet Union about four years ahead of the United States in the race to explore space. May 20, 1960—PACIFIC TRIBUNE—Page 7
