Church leader says: AT THE PEACE ARCH. “Nixon Get Out” was the main theme of the rally Sunday called by the United Church. This major peaceful demonstration Sgainst the war was largely ignored by the media which concentrated Defeat Employers Council plot EDITORIAL The Employers’ Council of B.C. and the big bosses it Tepresents are rapidly pushing the province to a crisis in their plot to shut down industry, to force low settlements °n workers, and deal a blow to the trade unions. This fact can no longer be Concealed. The big monopolies ‘ave ganged up on the unions and Public to impose their will on the Province. Their main aim is to bring down the wage standards Of B.C.’s workers. About this the Mployers’ Council has never Made any secret. F.K. Peskett, president of the Mployers’ Council, said as Much recently when he admitted that, “We have made no secret of the fact that we support whole- heartedly the efforts of the CLR ‘0 bring some order into the Chaos of this industry in which the wage settlements of the past have had such a big impact on our economy.”’ The determination of the big employers to shut down industry was shown by the arrogant attitude of the Construction Labor Relations Association in locking out the carpenters before the results of their vote on the latest offer was even known. It is further shown by the unscrupulous way in which the big contractors stopped cement supplies for smaller contractors in order to force them to shut down. FRIDAY, MAY 15, 1970 on publicizing the irresponsible action of a group led by ultra leftists which aimed to discredit the peace movement. The same arrogance is being shown by the big bosses of the forest enter into meaningful nego- tiations with the IWA to seek a contract settlement, they are using the tugboat strike to force a shutdown in the forest industry. industry. Rather than WAR OB ‘ Injunctions are being resorted _ to in an attempt to force wood- workers to handle “hot” logs or — shut down. An estimated 60 percent of the forest industry is already down. The tugboat owners are resorting to open scabbing to break the tug strike. The IWA leader who charged this week that the forest monopolies are attempting to use the same tactics as those now used by CLR in the con- struction absolutely right. Big Business industry was -ordinary ibune eS * VOL. 31 No. 20 —Jack Phillips photo has adopted an overall strategy in its war against labor. The carpenters union leader who said this week that the Employers’ Council is directing the CLR as part of the over-all campaign against the working people in B.C. was also absolutely right. @ It_ is important that labor should realize that this is no year in labor negotiations. Labor needs new tactics to meet the new situation. The big employers have - formed a united front to wage war on all unions. They are using their economic power ruthlessly to force smaller companies into line. See LABOR UNITY, pg. 3 = SCENE’ ) “The wars in Vietnam * and Cambodia are obscene. Escalation is no short cut to peace. It is a shortcut for disaster ... We are here to make visible by our presence our concern for the violent and unlawful invasion of Cambodia by U.S. troops. We can no longer be invisible witnesses to these things.”’ In a hard-hitting address to a crowd of about 1,000 people gathered near the Peace Arch near Blaine, Washington, Rev. Charles Forsyth, Secretary of the Board of Evangelism and Social Service, the United Church of Canada, made it clear that his church is prepared to stand up and be counted on the question of peace. Ignoring a line of bat and club- carrying youths, interspersed with helmetted policemen who lined the U.S. side of the International border, the Canadian churchmen and the audience affirmed their opposition to the wars in Indochina, and their determination for peace. Rev. Forsyth said there are ‘places in hell maintained for those who in a time of honest crisis maintain their neutrality. He pointed out that while North American people today are fighting against the evil wrought by chemical and earth-killing pollutants in their own land they remained silent while U.S. forces made of Vietnam ‘“‘the most devasted piece of earth in the world.” U.S. forces in Indochina have — shored up corrupt and unpopular ~ governments, while at home the unpopularity of the war has torn the U.S. itself apart. There is a tremendous connection between the four dead students in Kent and: the obscene war carried on abroad. He said that the people can no longer accept bland assurances that there will be ‘‘limited objectives’ and ‘‘early with- drawals’’ in the Cambodian See U.S., pg. 12
