From School Trustee Mrs. Margaret Smith, March 8th, 1977 regarding Smith re extended day & proposed new Sec.School #43 to accommodate a 'shift system’ or ‘extended day programme'. Mrs. the proposed new senior secondary school to be built by School District Smith was in attendance at the meeting and upon the invitation of Mayor Campbell addressed the Council and expressed her strong opposition to this proposal in view of the many problems encountered in the City when the chiidren are not required to be in school for a full day and requesting the support of the Council in her attempts to have the School Board reconsider their decision in this regard. A general discussion ensued during which some the problems being encountered by the Northside merchants were noted; the basic philosophy behind the apparent need for "extended day' facilities; the fact that although the Council has no right to interefere with School Board policy, they are directly involved due to the number of children on City streets during the day and the number of problems created for City merchants being within the jurisdiction and concern of the Council. Alderman Thompson suggested that although he agreed on a personal basis, he felt the Council as a whole did not have the privilege to interefere. Alderman Ranger suggested that insufficient information was available at this time to permit such a decision, and Alderman Mabbett agreed with the Previous speakers, however, he also agreed that the point made by Mrs. Smith regarding the youth problem was very real and wi~hin the jurisdiction of the Council. Alderman Traboulay commended Mrs. Smith on her concern cover expenditures of taxpayers money and indicated his support of her cause.
