Boarders blow away
southern competitors

SYLVIE GIANNELIA took
a southern snowboarding
contest by storm recently
proving the ‘northwest is
producing some top notch

young talent,

The local 15-year-oid
easily took top spot in the
girls’ division at the un-
ique snowboarding compe-
tition in Big White Feb. 8.

Ruins teammate Mike
Pederson, 16,. nabbed top
spot: in-the .boys~ division
and Tim Dopko; 23, nailed
first place in.an exhibition
division for riders over 19.

Pederson and Dopko
both hail from Prince Ru-
pert but ride at Shames
Mountain.

“The kids. that won
were amazing,” said con-
test spokesman. Craig. En-
gman,

“Sylvie was really good
— they were all doing in-
verted airs which is un-
heard of at that level.”

The Forum Snowboards
Youngblood competition is
a series of contests taking
place at select Canadian
ski resorts throughout the
winter.

At the end of the series
an overall winner will be
chosen to compete in a
competition at Big Bear in
California.

The idea is to get young
amateur snowboarders to
battle it out ona slope
style .course. filled’ -with
rails, boxes and jumps.

Riders are judged on

their execution, technical

ability and style.

The scope of ability at
the Big White contest
ranged from beginner ti-
ders up to excellent.

“Really, Terrace riders
wrapped. up,” said En-

. gman, also a former natio-

nal team coach.

“All of those people
should be going to any
event they can get to.”

TERRACE’S midget rep hockey team split a pair of

games with the Smithers Storm Feb. 7-8.

Smithers took the first game winning 5-1 with
Jack Haworth picking up Terrace’s lone goal.

The next day, Terrace won 4-1 with Sean Maho-
ney scoring twice, Stephen Cullis and Cody Lati-
mer adding singles in the effort. .

“Some people were
kind of like, ‘whoa, people
from the north took it all,’”
she recalled.

“Tt was really fun and
winning was just’a bonus.”

Team manager Tara

Valk was impressed with -

her performance.

“It was all ages of girls
so, Sylvie. was one of the
youngest. girls’ in her cate-
gory and it was her first
competition,” Valk said.

Though Gianellia’s
been snowboarding for six
years she has only. compe-
ted .at local comipetitions
before this event.

..“[ was nervous ‘going
into it — I didn’t really
know how I'd do,” she
said.

The recent development
of.a terrain park at Shames
Mountain helped the’ boar-
ders prepare for the event

And Engman says the
local riders made a big
impression at the contest.

“They are amazingly
talented and dedicated and
they deserve all the sup-
port they can get,” he said.

All three riders should
be taking part in an up-
coming boardercross com-
petition at Shames Moun-
tain next month.

Furlong Bay Sewer Forcemain Replacement

Wark will consist of excavation and replacement of the
existing Sewage Forcemain {approximately 1100 meters
tatal length.)

Mandatory Contractor Meeting: A contracior meeting will
be held at Lakelse Lake Provincial Park Headquarters 15 km
south of Terrace on Highway 37 at 10:00 am, February 27,
2003. If weather permits a site visit at Furlong Bay
Campground will commence directly after the contractor
meeting.

Tenders must be received by Skeena Project Services, 4445
Greig Ave, Terrace B,C, by 2:00 pm on March 27, 2003 at
which time tenders will be forwarded to Ministry of Water
Land and Air Protection (B.C. Parks} for opening.
