The pro- gram, funded by the Canada Em- ployment Centre and developed by the Native Education Centre in Vancouver, is fully accredited by Vancouver Community College and other post-secondary institu- tions. The’ program’s objective is to train native students in various business, financial and adminis- trative disciplines so that upon completion of the program, stu- dents will be able to obtain jobs at junior managerial or adminis- trative levels. It is comprised of 12 courses including Introduction to Canadi- an Business, Accounting, Busi- ness Law, Native Legal Issues, Effective Supervision, Inter-gov- ernmental Relations and Commu- nity Management Skills. In addi- tion, the students will participate in two four-week practicums to give them the opportunity to use their training in real work set- tings, While most practicums will be done locally, some students may do their practicums in Van- couver. Tom Weegar, recently arrived from Victoria with a background in native self-government and community-based development, useful and relevant to native peo- ple at this time because of the growing movement toward abor- iginal self-government. Native communities need people with administrative skills, who also have an understanding of Canadi- an business and the three levels of Canadian government — federal, provincial and municipal. The Native Public Administration program offers students skills and knowledge that can either be transferred into a non-native set- ting, or used within native band administrations. The students will have many opportunities for employment, and a clear idea of personal career goals upon com- pletion. Weegar hopes to hire most instructors locally, as an empha- sis is placed on regional history and issues throughout the train- ing, and community involvement is vital to the program’s success. The Native Education Centre is - presently running its‘ninth year or Native Public Administration, but Kitsumkalum is the first band to offer the program on an outreach basis. .
