Ruths make good in Houston contributed by Jim Fick “The Terrace Minor Baseball Junior Babe Ruth Allstar team. made the trip to Houston on Saturday, June 24 for the 1989 zone 8 Bulkley-Skeena Cham- pionships, to decide which team will represent zone 8 at the Pro- vincial playdowns in Duncan, B.C., the. week of July 17-22. There weré four-teams involv- ed in the playffos: Houston, 7 Burns Lake, Smithers and Ter- race. . -The first game in which our home team played was 11:30 a.m. Saturday against their arch-rivals, Burns Lake. Burns Lake came on’strong, taking an 8 to 3 lead by! the:fourth i inning. By the last. inning Terrace had made a comeback, but lost the game 11-10. Game two was immediately. at 3:00 p.m. and the opponents - The’ were the Smithers: team. Terrace Allstars, © with some great pitching by Garth Mutschke and Gary Peden (pit- ched a no hitter) and some outstanding bat work by Bryan Fick (two singles, one double, ore grand slam and six RBI’s), Kevin Oates (three singles, three RBI's)-and excellent play by the whole team defeated Smithers 26-1. When the game was over, we knew the stiffness from the. three hour drive had worn off. Game three was played at 7:00 p.m. the same night. The op- ponents were the hometown Houston team. Once- again the: Terrace battery was excellent. The pitchers Chad Zeigler, Bryan Fick and Gary Peden, and ° catchers Ryan Kennedy and: . Zeigler, allowed only three hits. The bats again were working over time with Fick hitting two singles and a home run for three RBI’s, Brent Neeve with one double and a home run for two RBI’s, Chad Zeigler with one single and a home run and two RBI’s and Art Soares two singles and one RBI. The team once again came together and worked like a well-oiled machine, with some great defensive work by ‘ shortstop Rob Larmour and 2nd base Mark Neeve; defeated the hometown hopeful 20-1. Game four came after a few hours sleep at 9 a.m. Sunday. Up to that point thé Burns Lake team was undefeated and very sure of themselves after beating - Terrace in their first game. The Terrace Allstar team was ready for this match. The battery was: pitching, Brent Neeve, Bryan Fick, and Gary Peden with Chad Zeigler: catching. The pitchers allowed: only three hits while Zeigler gun- ned down four of the Burns Lake team attempting to steal’ 2nd and two thinking they might make it from 2nd to 3rd. Our hitting continued as started in Game two. Fick — two singles, one double, one grand slam home run and one regular home run for eight RBI’s; Brett Kluss * — one home run for two RBI’s, and Kevin Oates — one single and one double for two RBI’s. This time Skeena pot. revenge and won the tourney on 4. 12-4 deci- sion.
