NOTICES ‘Equality necessary for S.A. women’ South African women are counting down the days to apartheid’s demise by insisting on equality today, says Nompi Mahlangu, of the Women’s Section of the African National Congress. “We are struggling to ensure that our liberation as women should take place now. We’re not waiting until apartheid ends,” says the former student activist. For the women who join the country’s leading anti-apartheid organization, this means fighting for equality inside the ANC, mobilizing South African women in the struggle against apartheid and forcing women’s equality onto the agenda of a free South Africa. Nowhere is the battle easy. The ANC has had a women’s section for most of its 78 years, but Mahlangu says for much of its ATTENTION SUBSCRIBERS TO NORTHERN NEIGHBOURS People’s Co-op Bookstore will process your subscription to Soviet periodicals. Three is not enough,” she adds. Today women members are actively involved in ANC strategy discussions around the conditions and content of impending negotiations between the libera- tion movement and the apartheid rulers. Ironically, mobilizing women inside the country is almost an easier job. Apartheid is so brutal a system, there is no choice but to fight back. “The victims of apartheid are mainly children,” says Mahlangu, herself a survivor of the student uprisings of 1976. “The best way. to mobilize parents is to attack the children.” On staff in the South African Congress of Trade Union’s office in Toronto, Mahlangu welcomes statements such as those coming from leaders such as Bishop Desmond Tutu in his call for a “non-racial, non-sexist South Africa.” “Tt is important for recognized leaders to raise such issues,” she says, because male supremacy is deeply rooted in the culture. “Tt is very difficult for African men to let go of this power, and give in to issues affecting women,” Mahlangu explains. “We have a very big job to emancipate our men, along with ourselves.” Such attitutes are maintained and fueled VISIT THE USSR For all your travel needs, big or small. Legally, women are permanently minors requiring the permission of fathers, hus- bands or sons before entering contracts. Families are torn apart by the Group Areas Act and apartheid robs mothers of the right to make even basic decisions about their children. Tinkering with apartheid does little to alleviate the pain. Mahlangu cites the recent lifting of the ban on mixed marriages. “A white man and a Black woman may now marry. But if a child is born, the father will not be able to accompany his wife to the hospital, because it is a ‘Black’ hospital. The child will be ‘coloured,’ which means it will have to be transfered to the ‘coloured’ hos- pital. “From the moment of birth, apartheid inflicts itself on the people.” ANKIN RON Barristers & Solicitors 4th Floor, 195 Alexander St. Vancouver, B.C.
