CONCEPT OF "LITE WEDNESDAY" The concept of Good News Day in 1986 stimulated a tremendous amount of interest from the media thoroughout British Columbia. The idea prompted several dozen phone calls from radio stations and newspapers, and for a time, focussed an enormous amount of attention on the proposed need for “more good news" in the media’. The problem was that the attention was focussed on Quesnel for raising the idea and the interviews generally followed that particular slant. By the time Good News Day rolled around, relatively few newspapers or radio/tv stations took up the rallying call to dedicate a portion of their broadcast or publication to the concept. It seemed editors everywhere got their hackles up over the suggestion that the media concentrates too much on the negative... that bad news is good news and good news is no news. To address that dilemma, we are pleased to announce the resurrection of this project under a new and improved title: Introducing...Lite Wednesday. Jointly sponsored by the City of Quesnel and the Quesnel Cariboo Observer, Lite Wednesday is scheduled to run in conjunction with Canada's birthday - Wednesday, July 1, 1987. What better way to pay tribute to all the positive attributes of our communities than on the nation's 120th birthday. For the media, we hope Lite Wednesday and the July 1st date will provide a natural angle. The fact that most community newspapers publish on Wednedays is part and parcel of the reasoning behind that specific day. We would ask you to encourage your local media to take a "lite" approach to Canada Day, to see the positive side of life in what I’m sure we all agree is the finest and most free nation in the world. We view Lite Wednesday as an opportunity to be humorous, pay tributes, write “spoofs” and generally have fun. In the spirit of competition, the City and the Observer will sponsor a prize for the best front page among B.C. newspapers taking part. The prize? An accomodation/airfare paid trip for two, to Quesnel for the best family fun festival in the pacific Northwest - Billy Barker Days- Judging will be handled by a group of independent journalists. We will forward additional correspondence and camera ready news stories on the concept during the coming weeks. Thank you for whatever assistance you might be able to give towards the success of Lite Wednesday - 1987. 29 By i
