JOHN McNEVIN OFF TO ALBERTA LONG-TIME Assistant Secretary of the B.C. Federation of Labour John McNevin is leaving his B.C. post to become Executive Secre- tary of the Alberta Federation of Labour. McNevin, who has worked for the Federation for the past nine years, was highly active in the New Democratic Party and was a candidate for the party in the riding of Yale a number of- years ago. He is expected to take up his new post some time in De- cember. THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER ROM PAGE ONE “CONVENTION” eight cents per member per month. The proposed increase, which has yet to be settled on; requires a notice of motion. It is presumed that the Federa- tion officers will come up with a figure and lobby support for it from the delegates attend- ing next year’s convention. The delegates dealt with ap- proximately 160 resolutions ranging from a condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Czech- oslovakia to the demand for the establishment of a provin- cial department of pollution control to guarantee healthy air, fresh water, clean beaches. The convention indicated its concern for world peace by stating flatly that labour was not playing the leadership role it should. Delegates complain- ed that labour should be more active on peace committees and not leave it to the clergy and fraternal organizations Some of the resolutions ap- proved called for: ® An end of the supply of Canadian arms for shipment to Vietnam. © Reduced military ex- penditure by Canada except to maintain a peace-keeping force. e Continued opposition by the Federation to the war in Vietnam. An attempt by the Federa- tion’s executive to have the conventions held every second year was defeated by the dele- gates who strongly indicated their desire to hold them an- nually.
