is built for entertaining and we do not take our friends down to the corner Pub for a drink as they do in England. He commented that«he would be directly atfected by either location proposed for a neighbourhood pub and he felt that the lack of parking and location was poor. Mrs. Smith commented that there was definite lack of parking at this location and pointed out that the restaurant established on the southwest corner of Coast Meridian and Prairie had suffered from lack of parking. Another resident spoke in favour, expressing his opinion that the hours of operation for a neighbourhood pub are good and he felt that the area could support one more outlet. He pointed out that neighbourhood pubs have the advantage of serving all types of beverages and food. Mr. Reg Chiasson, representing the Northside Merchants’ Association, pointed out that their group had met on April 4th, 1977 and voted unanimously in support of a Pub for the the Northside Shopping Centre area. The group felt that any additional business in the area would, in turn, create more business for all Northside Merchants. With regard to the Union remarks on the Pubs detracting from Hotel business, he commented that this was only fair competition, and that the Hotels should not be afraid of gcod competition. He commented that the Pub concept is similar to tnat of the Legion which has been around for many years without difficulty. He also commented that~ the Northside Association had given some consideration to their businesses staying open until 10:00 p.m. nightly, in crder to create more interest and activity around the area. He agreed that people will probably drive rather than walk to a neighbourhood pub in the area and pointed out that parking has not been a problem on the Northside in spite of the fact that if every business on the Northside had three patrons with cars at any one time, there would not be enough parking. He commented that the failure of the restaurant on the southwest corner of Coast Meridian and Prairie, referred to earlier, was not becuase of inadequate parking but because everything else in the vicinity closed up at 6:00 p.m. and there was not enough activity in the area to create business for the restaurant. There was a considerable amount of comment in connection with the manner in which the survey of owners in the six block radius was carried out. This survey is a requirement of the Liquor Administration Board and no firm rules have been set down until recently, as to how these surveys should be carried out. It would appear from the comments of those in attendance that some owners had not been contacted, some people under the age of 18 had signed petitions, and there was general confusion as to who was qualified to sign such a petition. The general impression gained was that the meeting was divided approximately evenly either for or against the establishment of neighbourhood pubs. LDP /w
