_ TERRACE — A little part of Japan can now be found in Terrace. by Sherry Halfyard Matt and Kaye Ehses, owners of. Northern Light Studio in Terrace, have created an authen- tic Japanese Garden in their own backyard. The idea of building a Japanese Garden has been a dream of the Ehses for many years. Recently, with a lot of hard work, and the assistance of Ken Batch of Azalea Gardens, they have turned their dream into a reality. The Ehses have been residents of Terrace for the past 10 years. Matt is originally from Ger- many, and Kaye is from the United States. They both . felt the peace- fulness of northern B.C. would be a good place to settle and raise their three children. Kaye studied ‘with a Buddhist monk and tas traveled oxten- sively in the Orient. The Ehses’ backyard turned out to be a natural setting for the garden, possessing trees and moss that blends well with the Oriental theme. The first part of the garden is a natural B.C. walk, with plants in- digenous to the area. It is sharply contrasted with the structured sym- metrical style of the Japanese garden. , The Ehses have used Japanese garden thrives traditional Japanese designs for the creation of the garden. . Four types of Japanese maple, bam- boo, cherry, plum and angelica trees have been brought in to enhance the setting.
