COAST MERIDIAN / PRAIRIE INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS Traffic Signal Timing The Coast Meridian / Prairie signal has an existing intergreen clearance period of 3.0 seconds. To comply with RTAC standards, this interval should be increased to 5.0 seconds, (4.0s of amber and 1.0s of all red). Speeding Traffic I believe the RCMP currently does periodic checks of this intersection for violations. They should be requested to continue with these checks, especially for drivers speeding and running red lights. Intersection Geometry Hamilton has proposed geometric changes to this intersection as shown on figure 3. These changes would include the reduction of lane widths and the elimination of exclusive right turn lanes. The changes proposed are likely warranted but can probably wait until redevelopment occurs adjacent to the intersection. Also croposed is the construction a centre median on Prairie, to restrict left turus in and out of developments east of the intersection. Centre medians on Prairie, at both sides of the intersection will definitely be required as traffic increases in this part of the City. However, current traffic levels do not place an urgency for this construction. The inconvenience placed on the businesses and drivers may outweigh the safety concerns at this time. Pedestrian Head and Inductance Loop Installation The traffic signal at the Coast Meridian/Prairie intersection lacks pedestrian heads, The installation of pedestrian heads will improve the efficiency of turn movements for vehicles, and ensure pedestrians have cleared the intersection at the end of their signal phase. The signal controller at this intersection is capable of fully actuated operation but is presently set for two phase, fixed-time control. The installation of inductance loops for each direction will reduce delays for drivers, especially during off-peak periods.
