TERRACE STANDARD. The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 16, 1998 - AY oe BUSINESS REVIEW Out & Airport loses revenue About from airline changes Fewer tourists THE NUMBER of re- corded tourist visits here was down about 13 per cent in August from a year ago. Just under 2,500 visitors stopped at the Tourist In- focentre that month, com- pared to 2,867 in August, 1997, according to Terrace Tourism Council coor- dinator Maria McGowan. The number of parties that came to the infocentre, how- ever, was up slightly to 1,494, implying smaller groups of people here. Part of the reason for the decline is the centre’s sum- nier student left earlier this year, McGowan said. But she said the rest of the blame for the poor tourism season falls on angling closures ‘to protect endangered coho, continu- ing anxst about ferry reliability, and the condition of Hwy 37. “Those three things com- bined scared off a lot of people,’? McGowan said. For sale, but no takers TWO COMMERCIAL properties owned by Rudon Enterprises and the Ter- race Co-op are still for sale. They have not — repeat not — been bought so far by the Overwaitea / Save On Foods group as one persis- tent rumour would have it. Rudon manager Russ - Smith says their Hwy16 West property is for sale and if a buyer does come, ~ they'll downsize operations. He said they’ve had some sniffs of interest; but no deal. “*] people looking,’ he said. “And we heard it was Save On Foods aad Overwaitea. But there’s nothing firm or even close,”’ One incentive to sell is that the property tax assess- ment on the land has jumped dramatically since the development of Cana- dian Tire next door. “Tf: the opportunity did come we would definitely sell,’’ he added. ‘We have far too. much property and shop space right now for the way the economy is.” Terrace Co-op’s Ed Berney also reports dif- ficulty selling the prime downtown property, which has been on the market since the main store closed in June, throwing 80 em- ployees out of work, “We haven't had any of- fers on it,’’ Berney said. “We've had — inquiries. People looking for info on size of the lot, size of the building, layout that sort of | stuff." All but two of the in- quiries were fom locals, he added, “T don’t see any reason to dump it for a non-market price,’ he added. ‘That wouldn’t be in the best in- terests of ihe membership.”’ Progress on Charlottes THE QUEEN Charlotte Is- lands now has its own federally-financed economic develapment corporation. The Haida Gwaii Com- munity Futures Develop- ment Corporation was of- ficially declared in business last week and will take a key role in assisting and lending money to existing and new business op- portunities there. it joins 32 other such cor- porations in the province, one of which, the 16-37 Community Futures Devel- opment Corporatian, is - based in Terrace, ‘Money comes from the federal government’s west- ern economic diversification, program. yee CUTS AND changes in air- line service here will trim projected airport revenues by nearly 15 per cent. The airport — which is to be taken over by a local non-profit authority — anticipates a decline in an- nual revenues of around $150,000 as a result of the changes, said city economic development officer Ken Veldman. The loss of money is be- cause two airlines are going to be paying less in landing fees here. Canadian Ajrlines has switched from 737 jet ser- vice to a sinaller Fokker F- 28 jet. And Central Mouatain Air has ended regular scheduled service from here to Dease Lake and Watson Lake, and also its run east to Smithers and Prince George. The revenuc drop is a sig- ‘ nificant chunk of the air- port’s projected revenue of $1.1 million a year. And that has implications for the negotiations now un- derway between the Terrace-Kitimat Airport Society and Transport Cana- da to take over the airport. Transport Canada has agreed to contribute what it would normally pay in grants through to the end of 2000 to support airport transfers. Any loss in revenue would force up the federal. government’s sub- sidy and theoretically lead to a larger grant, But the local airport society: will be on its own after 2000. |FARM A know. there’s’ OICTUIES US - Birthday Sale For - The Month Of September Core : All framing and pictures ¢ Everything in the Hobby Store landing fees to the airport. THE FOKKER F-28 jets now being used here by Ca- nadian Airlines are smaller than the previous Boeing 737s, The result is less money paid by the airline in Veldman said the revenue trouble underscores the city’s contention that the airport needs title tc the Crown ‘ands surrounding it to ensure an extra source of revenue. The city has been unable to get the provincial government to agree to such a transfer. Veldman said work is also underway to replace the routes flying north and east vacated by Central Mountain Air. ‘We're aclively involved in marketing those routes Lo some smaller third tier car- riers to see who might be in- terested in filling those routes,’” Veldman said. Although the Canadian Airlines service is actually improving to some degree — flighis are now direct to Vancouver and they’re three ties a day in winter instead of twice — the smaller size of the 55-passenger plane Means less money for the airport. ‘In rough terms the F-28 brings in half of the landing, fees that a 737 docs,”’ Veld- man cxplained, ‘“That’s where the bulk of that $150,000 comes from.” “'There’s not a heck of a lot we can do there,’ he added. “From a_ service point of view they’re actual- ly providing a better service to the Terrace area.’’ He noted that although the plane flies somewhat slower, that may give pilots more time to spot the run- way on approach here, That could translate into a better record of landings and fewer inissed approaches.
