MEGAN ROSE Geier and aunt iris Geier wait for a bus in front of the Skeena Mall, The city and the province have both added money to the service. While . there are route cuts, they aren't as deep as first planned. JESSIE GIES PHOTO Bus service kept on by city and province THE CITY will put $3,800 more than it planned into the local bus system this year to avoid deeper route cuts. Councillor Stew Christensen said fur- ther cuts — beyond ones already planned - would have cut into ridership revenue and led to lower contributions from B.C. Tran- sit, worsening the cash crunch.. “Tf we didn’t put another $3,800 into the budget we were going to have to re- duce the expenditure on transit by $36,000,” he said. The city has been under pressure to cut transit costs or pour more money into the system because of the province's freeze on subsidies it provides through B.C. Transit. But Victoria has relented somewhat, safety tips approving a one-time extra $11,000 from B.C. Transit to help the Terrace system. “It solves the immediate crisis for this year only,” Christensen said. Part of the plan to raise extra money next year is to increase bus fares, Adult fares would rise from $1.25 to $1.50 next spring, and student/senior fares would rise from $1 to $1.25. Other passes would also go up by about 20 per cent. The increases would raise an extra $15,000. Bus cuts taking effect this week in- clude eliminating a Friday night south- side and college run, eliminating one of two daily southside runs right after schocls let out, and having two routes run instead by the HandyDart vehicle. on the Web AUTOPLAN INSURANCE brokers in B.C, have creat- ed a Web site aimed at driving safety.
