' Airport to buy building THE AIRPORT has reached a deal to buy the old Air Canada cargo building from the airline. The sale will see the airport pay Air Canada $45,000 for the building next to the main terminal, Northwest Regional Air- port manager Rick Reed said last week. “They came to us and we made them an offer,” he said, He said the airport has no immediate plans for the building, calling it a good long-term investment. “It’s a strategic loca- tion,” Reed noted, He said there are no plans to displace existing tenants, which include Shell, National Car Rental and Avid Aviation. Reed said the deal should close by the end of the month. je gegen i Foe Southbound CENTRAL MOUNTAIN Air is now also flying to Abbotsford. V8G-1M9 could dwarf early projections TERRACE is a key part of Prince Rupert’s drive to at- tract cruise ships, a port official says. Shaun Stevenson, spokesman for the Port of Prince Rupert, told a Nov. 14 Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Terrace Inn that rail excursion tours of cruise pas- sengers here add to the attraction of docking in Prince Rupert. He said the road and rail link heading aut of Prince Rupert is a crucial feature that distinguishes the north coast from most southeast Alaskan towns. Besides giving passengers more to do while docked on the north coast, he said, it also means more profits for cruise lines. They get 20 per cent commissions for selling their passengers excursions such as the rail trip to Terrace, he said. But Stevenson told Chamber members it’s crucial Terrace create a positive and exciting experience for cruise visitors. “The cruise industry will not come to Terrace by default,” he said. “The key is going to be how are you going to position § yourself to add value.” He strongly urged Terrace to § base cultural events, shopping and other attractions for cruise ship passengers in the immediate area of the railway station here. “It should be considered Ter- race’s cruise dock,” he said. “ Stevenson said it’s up in the air | whether rail excursions will be pos- sible with the handful of large cruise visits set for 2003. He said Shaun the port is waiting for VIA Rail to Stevenson decide whether it has extra passen- ger cars available, now that B.C. Rail passenger service has ended, scuttling two-railway circle tours. “We're still trying to pull something together, but it may be into the new year before we find out,” he said. The foundation of the port’s plans are a cruise ship dock offloading passengers right into Cow Bay. Geotechnical surveying is complete and detailed en- gineering design is to be finished next month. “We'll tender the project in January and construction the spring,’ fr large cruise ships next year. The lines are testing ser- vices here prior to committing to the area for 2004. The port is planning for one large cruise ship per week starting in the first year of dock operalions, grow- ing ta up to seven per week — about one a day — by the end of 10 years, spilling a quarter million passengers a year onto the north coast. But evidence is growing, he said, that the actual re- ponse to the new dock will exceed the port’s conserva- tive projections for the early years. “We could see as many as three ships per week in year one,” Stevenson suid. Stevenson said they’ve also been working on increas- ing small cruise traffic. Smal! ship stops are projected to prow about 50 per cent to between 40 and 50 next year.
