Dr. Powell fought also for
entry of Brilish Columbia into
Confederation and when that
came about Sir John A. Mac-
donald the Prime Minister, of-
fered him the post of .lieuten-
ant-governor of the province,
or a seat in the senate. Powell
refused both positions, but he
did accept the rank of Lieutén-
ant-colonel in the militia and tin
1972 he accepted an appoint.

In this capacity he toured
Indian settlements throughout
the province. It was on one of
these Journeys that his name
was bestowed’: on the river
where the pulp and paper com-
munity was lo be later estab-
lished.

He became a large landowner
in carly Vancouver and donated
the site for the first city hall.
He died in 1915, one of the
most respected men of his time.
