New machines are dis- placing manpower. The rapid advance of mechani- zation in the last five years, and still continuing, is enabling a smaller work force to break all previous production records. This presents our Union with a top priority problem involving the job security, employ- ment and seniority rights of our members. We cannot stand in the way of technological pro- gress. Our responsibility is to make sure that this pro- gress does not throw lumber workers on an industrial scrapheap. The problems which follow in the wake of techno- logical change cannot be entirely solved at the bar- gaining table. These changes vary according to the size and loca- tion of the operations, but the whole picture requires the close attention of our Union. The amazing contrast between old and new methods of logging was impressed upon me, when, as a member of the industry’s Wage Revision Committee, WHAT‘S INSIDE I returned to operations where | was employed as a. logger ten years ago. Loggers who have worked in the woods during the last ten years will tell the same story. All of them ask the same question. ‘““What happens next to our jobs and our wage rates?” Huge, high-powered, mobile equipment and new techniques are revolutionizing logging.
