RAY LI prepares to cycle from Terrace to Prince Rupert on his B.C. problem of landmines on behalf of the Red Crass. Sh + journey to bring attention to the deadly His father, Gordon, escorted him in a Red Cross van. Cycling for the Red Cross RAY LI] has encountered semis, bead- winds, storms and — near Burns Lake — a bear on his bicycle journey through B.C. to highlight the problem of land mines. Li lefi the northwest last week via the ferry to Vancouver Island, headed ultimately back to Vancouver to com- - plete the journey started May 8. A Ret Cross youth volunteer, Li, 23, says landinines are one of the world’s more deadlier problems. ‘Al between $3 and $30 cach, land- mines are a cost effective way of con- ducting warfare. But the reality is they often end up killing aud injuring civilians — often years after the war has ended, “Each month 2,000 people are ei- ther killed or maimed,”’ said Li. There are an estimated 110 qillion landmines planted in 64 countries. Clearing them is a massive job in- volving huge amounts of money and danger to those. who do the jab. Li, a Red Cross youth volunteer for the past six years, focussed on fand- mines after discussing the situation with other voluntecrs, “We were looking to do a project and decided on landmines for the devastation they cause,’’ he said, The Red Cross is but one organiza- tion involved in projects to help those maimed by the explosive devices. And through this trip Li’s raising taoncy to continue on with those pro- grams. In addition to helping victims of land mines, the Red Cross has taken an active roll in banning their manufacture and use. Canada was oncea leading producer of land mines but stopped making parts for them in 1987, An experienced cycler, Li averages 70 to 250 kilometres a day on a 21- speed mountain bike, By the time he’s finished, the UBC science graduate will have covered 5,500km. On the northern leg, Li was ac- companied by his father, Gordon, in a Red Cross van.
