HELPS LEAD EFFORT

A leader in the current
Chinese educational effort is
an old hand, Chou Pei-yuan,
a physicist in his 70s who
studied in the United States
before 1949 and now is vice-
chairman of Peking
University.

During a one-half day visit
to the university by a group
of Associated ress
executives and directors,

the Chou unfolded his story. He

spoke in Chinese, although
English is excellent.
Occasionally he would in-
terrupt the interpreter to
correct a nuance.

There is no filtration

envisage using the tunnel to
move people out of the city
and into the mountains, not
to keep them under ground.
Oxygen would go down in a
natural draft, Chao said, but
there are plans to install air
pumps and filters.

As we pulled away in a
light rain, the interpreter
was asked what the slogans

‘B.C. The Industrial First

Aid Attendants Association
of B.C. originally had the
responsibility but
relenguished it to St. Johns.

In this area, under the
N.W.C.C. Industrial First
Aid has always been given
the priority it deserves in
top quailty equipment,
facilities and instructior
andhas gotreshlts. JOHN'S
CAN NOT MATCH THE
COLLEGE EQUIP-
MENT AND CAN NOT
GUARANTEE FULL
FACILITIES AS THE
COLLEGE COULD WERE
THE PROGRAM MAIN-
TAINED.

into the loca] Industrial
‘First Aid, according to its
individual needs, where a8
St. Johns has let it be known
that they are going’ to
‘conduct courses as cheaply
as possible so as to finance
their other programs.

We believe that at $100 per
course from students, they
‘should receive the best
instruction possible plus the
most up to date equipment
and facilities.

In a desperate bid to
establish themselves in this
area, St.Johns is dispat-
ching an instructor from
Vancouver to teach 2 two-
week “crash” courses in
Terrace and Prince Rupert.
The past failure rate in
these “crash’’ course has
been In the neighbourhood of
70 percent.

At present, in the Terrace
area, alone, there are 50 to
60 first aid attendants and
first aid attendants waiting
the course. St. Johns has not
requested the Northwest
Community College (which
is fully capable of spon-
soring Industrial First Aid
to put on a course.)

According to our in-
formation, this is also the
feeling in Prince George,

Kamloops, Prince Rupert to

available. Why are we
stymied by, St.Johns Am-
bulance? Especially when
your directive states that
theyare to request the
colleges if they are unable to
put forth a course.

Perhaps you can shed
come light as to the reasons
for giving St.Johns a
monopoly in B.C. as well as
why they are so desperately
thrying to hold it.

babies. Between $48 and $53, I was told,

This cat just showed up on m y doorstep

to the cat, go find somebody else to take
pity on you. I left for work, Came home
