For 20 years they neglected social services while handing over our rich natural resources to the big cor- porations. Who can forget their arrogance and biased anti-labor attitude? Bill Bennett wants to take us back to that. “The NDP government in- troduced much needed social legislation — Mincome, Phar- macare, auto insurance, etc. All worthwhile reforms. But today, the NDP has retreated before big business pressures. In September it passed strikebreaking Bill 146, which Bill Bennett says is ‘‘the finest legislation the NDP has ever passed,’’ and which, he says, the Socreds fully support. Rent con- trols are being abandoned. The mining companies have been promised concessions. “There is reason for concern. If this trend continues the gains working people have made will be lost. This is why we need Com- munists in the Legislature. Only the. Communists can be counted on to fight for genuine people’s anti- monopoly policies — to oppose the retreat before big business pressure, and fight against strikebreaking legislation and compulsory arbitration. “On December 11 reject the Socreds and other parties of big business. Holmgren said that about twenty of the four feet by eight feet plywood signs have been either burned or smashed into small pieces. He estimated the damage to be “several hundred dollars. “Tt appears to be a systematic campaign designed to prevent the voters in this constituency from knowing that there is a Communist candidate running in the election,” Holmgren said. He said that the RCMP assured him that they would “alert. their personnel” about the problem. Holmgren has also filed a’ protest with the B.C. Human Rights Commission in Victoria. ‘““‘We have protested to the commission because we feel that a very basic civil liberty is at stake here, namely the right of the voters in this constituency to know who is running in the election.” PACIFIC TRIBUNE—NOVEMBER 28, 1975—Page 12 majority, including Communists. The proposed Trident submarine base “‘is contrary to the rules of international law, and is to be considered as a crime against humanity and as a crime against all mankind and civilization.”’ a noted international jurist said Tuesday night in a speech at UBC. Mary Kaufman, an American representative at the Nuremburg War Crimes tribunal was speaking as part of the UBC Alma Mater Society and Pacific Life Com- munity sponsored “Trident Con- cern Week.”’ Kaufman said that the destruction caused by one of the 550 foot submarines would be so great and so catastrophic that it could completely wipe out the population of an entire country. “When we are speaking of such massive destruction it is no longer a question of ‘‘war”’ but a question of a criminal act.” She said that the principles of the Nuremburg tribunals, in which the United States participated, made it clear that anyone who was aware or involved in a criminal action was guilty of that act ‘‘whether or not they were giving orders. In this context, it is the duty of all of us who are aware of the development of the Trident submarine base to protest its development and to work to stop it from going ahead.”’ Kaufman said that during the prosecution of the Nazi war criminals, two charges were brought, those of war crimes and those of crimes against humanity. “The latter phrase is the most concise description ever of the concept behind the Trident sub- marine base,”’ she said. She said that continued pressure must be brought upon the American government to abandon its plans of developing Trident. “As well’? she said, ‘‘your government, the Canadian government must be forced to _ protest the building of this base so close to its shores.
