4 ultimate decision will be A12 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 24, 1999 wanted cbeen the preferred training ‘HERITAGE PARK on the bench comes under new the Terrace Pipes and Drums in tront of the Kalum ownership Friday when the city takes over from the Terrace Regional Museum Society. Shown here are Lake Hotel, the park's centrepiece. The park has col- | lected 4,000 donated artifacts over the years. Museum society bows out after 16 years THE CITY has agreed to take over ownership of Heritage Park Museum from the Terrace Regional Museum Society thal started the museum in 1983 and has run it ever since. A formal signing ceremony is planned for March 26 to mark the handover of the eight historic buildings and 4,000 donated artifacts. ‘‘We are quite pleased about the whole thing,” said Mamie Kerby, the museum’s lead volunteer over the years. “Sixteen years ago we started with a grassy field and we've goto where we’re at now,’’ she said, ‘‘But we need to go upwards from here,”” _ Key voluntecrs like Kerby are getting older and the society had warned the city it could not run it forever. Théir main goal is to eventually see the museum profes- sionally managed by a trained curator. Such a person would bring modem skills in display, - preservation, administration and technology. Local fire training NORTHWEST FIREFIGHTERS could soon be able to get trained in the’ north, says Terrace fire chief Randy Smith. He represents Terrace at the Northwest Emergency Training Academy, an new- ly formed non-profit society made up of regional fire de- partments and local businesses, set up to run a regional training centre. Smith will lobby for a site at the Terrace-Kitimat Air- port, but he knows he’ll face resistance from Kitimat. That city, he said, had location but when an original site there was ruled out. because it wasn’t cost effective, the search began for another one. Smith said the academy’s , based on what type of train- ing the northwest needs, which facilities can be pro vided and where to put them. “In the end it will go in the most appropriate spot for the training centre,” Smith said. The academy would in- clude fire extinguisher and breathing apparatus training. It would also house a con- crete or steel building for hot-fire . taining, which would allow new of effort That won't happen immediately. The city’s plan for this year is to have the park managed by the parks and recrea- tion department. They’re also planning to hire a university student with training in museum studies to manage the operation for the summer months, “This is what we were hoping for,’? Kerby said. ‘‘We thought maybe they might spring for a quatified full-time curator, but this is a first step.’’ The city agrees as part of the handover to never sell, loan out or remove artifacts from the park except for restoration orconservation. —- Kerby and the society’s other 45 volunteers will still remain active in the background, she added, . The muscum’s buildings were moved to the location and restored in the early 1980s through the assistance of vari- ous federal government grants. a Pager and 6 months service | 59 95 Panasonic EN-POWER te Aa ey ELECTRONIC FUTURES && 4710 Keith Ave.°635-7767 Offer also includes voice mail and personal greeting. 4a Ferien BC TEL Mobility _ 44 Authorized Dedler B Informed: Offer includes Panasonic EM-POWER pag er, 400 numeric messages per month and local coverags.
