ot STM re eh SOT LAR} Ty ' A2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, December 30, 1997 Recallers entering | Phase II of effort to oust Giesbrecht CANVASSERS WANT- ING ta remove Skecna MLA Helmut Giesbrecht have been knocking on doors for three days now, The approach is Phase II of a campaign which began in early December with peti- tion signers coming to the Crash Helmut office. But now, with the Christ- mas season over, organizers are moving into a more in- tensive effort to gather sig- natures. They need 40 per cent of the people — 7,558 — who were on the voters list for the 1996 provincial election. Crash Helmut organizer Lorne Sexton said the group now has 124 registered can- vassers who'll be going door to door. Canvassers are either going in pairs or with anoth- er person for reasons of safety and to act as wil- nesses, said Sexton. “We want to ensure everything will be OK,” Sexton said of the pair plan. Organizers have until Feb. 3 to gather signatures. Sexton said canvassers have been given specific areas in which to go door to door, They’re working from computerized lists which have already taken into ac- count people who signed the petition prior to Christmas. Sexton still won’t release the results of the campaign, noting that just over 2,100 people committed them- selves to signing the petition ANTI-RECALLERS THREE weeks ago protested the use of a trailer promoting recall that was parked on a city street. Pro-recall forces followed up by stretching a banner from their office over the sidewalk to a power pole, in the week leading up to its filing. Organizers are also to open an office in Kitimat and canvassers from here could very well be sent to that city to help gather names, said Sexton. There are even canvassers in other parts of B.C. to gather names from those on the list who have now moved away. . ‘We have people in Cast- legar, Nanaimo, Victoria, Vancouver, Prince George, Prince Rupert and Chil- liwack,’’ sald Sexton. One of the canvassers is Chub Down, who was an alderman here in the days when Giesbrecht was mayor. A political foe of Gies- ‘brecht, Down has expressed great interest in helping the Crash Helmut campaign, said Sexton. kaekkk In Prince George, where a campaign is underway to oust education minister Paul Ramsey from his Prince George North seat, organizers just before Christmas said they had gathered 5,200 of the 8,908 signatures they need. They had earlier predicted they would have all they needed by Dec. 20, Still, organizers said they had reached 60 per cent of the number they need. And they noted they had reached just 40 per cent of the homes in the riding by the time they hit the 5,200 signature mark.
