Although Watson declined ~ lo say why she stopped doing the procedure, she did note that bvo Canadian doc- tors who do abortions, one in Vancouver and one in Hamilton, have been shot at. There are no doctors who do abortions currently’ prac- tising in Prince Rupert and the one in Kitimat will only perforin the procedure. on women over the age-of 19, Mills Memorial Hospital administrator Michael Leisinger says it is under no obligation to seck oul an ob- stetrician/gynecologist who would do abortions to be in Terrace at all times. But when Dr. Almas ar- rives, he says the hospital must and will cooperate with her. Karla Hennig at the Ter- race Women’s Resource Centre says most of the women who come in need- mg abortion counselling are velween 14 and 22, or over 35, “It’s a big concern for us that the procedure is not available in Terrace right now,’’ she says. But she adds il’s even worse for the women who are considering it. “Most of the women who cone in here don’t have the knowledge base or the financial base, and now they have to consider the cost of travelling as well.” Hennig says when women come into die centre they’re counselled to keep all of their options open.
