SPIRITED DISCUSSION took olace J Jan. 31 when union members taok their protest of the provin- cial government's Kemano decision to Skeena NDP MLA Giesbrecht. That's him in the center. MLA feels Kemano heat IT WOULD have been ‘‘political suicide”? for the provincial government to Jet the Kemano Completion Project go ahead, Skeena NDP MLA Helmut Gies- brecht told a small crowd of demonstrators in front of his of- fice last week. "How do you go fight 64 per , cent?” said Giesbrecht in refer- ting to an opinion poll which showed a majority of the popula- tion opposed Alcan’s $1.3 billion project . But demonstrators told Gies- brecht the NDP was making deci- sions based on popularity instead of on ihe merits of the project. “Do we mun the province on polls?” asked one protester while another said the government was more interested in votes in Van- couver than in people who live in the northwest. It was an wonic moment for Giesbiecht who, as a member and as a president of the Terrace teachers union, had taken part in demonstrations and lead a strike in the late 1980s. The protesters were members of ‘Spring ‘95) local trades unions affected by the provincial government’s deci- sion to kill the half-finished Kemano project. They and Giesbrechi also dis- agreed on the Findings of the B.C. Utilities Commission report used by the government as justification to stop the project. Giesbrecht reminded protesters that Harcourt came to Kitimat at — his invitation ithe day after the kill announcement to speak to people. ‘For an hour and a half you beat on him and three minutes into his response you heckled him,”’ said Giesbrecht, Protester Allan Grier, waving a sign that said ‘‘No More NDP For B.C,’’, said he worried about jobs for bis children. | ‘Harcourt has devastated this community,’’ said Grier. Although he didn’t work direct- ly on the project, Grier has been employed as one of the caretakers of the mothballed Kemano Com- pletion Project equipment and facilities, Begun in 1988, ihe project was shut down in 1990 after an initial 635-2976. | Past Pick) Heritage Woods..............
