The following week, February 28 at 9 p.m., Classic Theatre presents “Edward II’ — the story of a young homosexual king whose choice of lover led to wars, intrigue, royal purges and ultimately to his own hideous murder at the hands of a professional sadist. One of the most stunning and disturbing plays ever written, ‘Edward If’ was also one of the theater’s most rarely performed works. But its recent per- Black Church in’ America This Far by Faith, an hour-long film exploring the evolution of the black church in America, will be broadcast February 22 at 8 p.m. on Public TV 9. - This sensitive. mapping of. provides an ; black hist " excellent follow-up to the recent monomental television adaptation of Alex Haley’s ‘‘Roots”. This Far by Faith follows the American black church from its roots on the African continent, through the slavery era, Reconstruction and into the 20th century. Historical transitions are - accomplished through a central narrator (Brock Peters), who is joined in the film by such noted black artists as Roscoe Lee Browne, Beah Richards, Glynn Thurman and the Edwin Hawkins Singers. Author James Baldwin and Broadway director Geoffrey Holder (The Wiz”) are interviewed. Production was super- vised by Peters and Belkin, based on a concept -developed by Byron Lewis, President of Uniworld, co- producer of the documen- tary. The film’s objective, Lewis observed, “is to illustrate not only how the black church has served as the Bedrock of the black ‘community ~ in preserving ‘its strength and heritage and in producing its leaders — but also to show how the church has benefitted the entire country. : _ This Far by Faith, which paints a provocative illustration of how the black church has nutured and fostered Afro-American cultural traditions, was made possible by a grant from the American Telephone and Telegraph Company.
