_ Jazz songs and doughnut shops _The Terrace Concert Society lines up a variety of shows for the new season By JENNIFER LANG THE CURTAIN opens on the Terrace Concert Soc- iety’s new season Sept. 19 with the smooth, soulful jazz of former ‘80s power pop balladeer Alfie Zappa- costa, . The award-winning Ed- montonian, whose career spans 20 years, will per- form a mix of original pop songs and jazz standards. ‘The older and wiser Zappacosta, who had a‘ string of chart-toppers in the ‘80s (‘‘Passion”, “Start Again”, and “Overload”, a song included on the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack) has toned down the rock in his songs and tuned up the jazz. “He’s still got the voice,” concert society president Karen Birkedal says.of Zappacosta, a ver- satile singer who has also branched out into music theatre roles, including the title role in Jesus Christ Superstar, and more re- cently film. His version of the clas- sic “Me and Mrs. Jones” is a showstopper. The newly-invigorated Terrace Concert Society presents a 2003-04 season that runs the gamut, from a leading edge string quartet to a genuine Kentucky bluegrass concert — and everything in between, in- cluding a drama set in a’ Tim Horton’s doughnut shop. What else would you expect? Next up is Winnipeg’s crilically-acclaimed Buhr Quartet on Sept. 26. Led by composer, con- ductor and pianist Glenn Buhr, the quartet has an original sound, a blend of improv techniques and jazz standards from across the decades. Think Holly Cole or Diana Krall — times four. Several members of the quartet have been to the northwest before under previous incarnations — vo- calist and violist Richard, Moady played with the Wyrd Sisters, while guitar- ist Greg Lowe once-played with Swing Soniq. Writer, father and ob- servational humourist Nils Ling returns to Terrace Oct. 11, His new show, The Truth About Love and Marriage takes over where his last effort, The Truth About Daughters left off. Prince Edward Island quartet Barachois (Nov. 8) plays traditional Aca- dian music, complete with kitchen skillets, wooden spoons — and stepdancing. “You don't have to know. French to know fun,” says Birkedal, who has wanted to bring the band to Ter- race far several years. The Borealis String Quartet starts off the new year wilh a performance in January. The ensemble, featuring four young musi- cians, is at the leading edge of Canadian classical scene.
