‘A12 - The Jerrace Standard, Wednesday, Octaber 2, 2002 School district puts kibosh on some student bus riders THE FREE RIDE is over. School District 82 is cracking, down on freeloa- ders who hap on the school bus even though they’re! not eligible for a ride. These courtesy riders — students who live inside the school walk limit or go to private schools — will, have to find another way to get where they’re going. “We haven't been al- lowing them on since the beginning of the school year because we wanted to, get an accurate count of, our eligible riders,” the district’s maintenance and transportalion superinten- dent Robert Gilfillan said. “Once we have an ac- curate count, if the buses have room, we wili still give courtesy rides.” The rules say students in Grades 1-3 can take the school bus if they live be- yond a 4-km radius from their school. The walk limit is 4.8 km for students in Grades 4-7, In the past, bus drivers taking students from the Horseshoe to Kalum Lake Drive and north Terrace would allow students poing to Uplands Elementary on the Bench to hop on the school bus for free and get dropped off. “Fhey want the free ride and we’ve been told we can’t pive the free ride anymore,” Farwest Bus Lines Ltd. operations man- SCHOOL STUDENTS who aren't eligible to take the bus according to school district regulations will be getting more walking exercise or will have to find an- other way to get to class following a crackdown on bus use by the district. ager Jerry Peltier said. ’ Students living in the Uplands area fall into the under 4.8km walk limit. That means they either _need to take public trans- ' portation, get a ride from a parent or someone else or walk to and from school. Peltier said there is an alternative for students who aren’t getting the free ridé anymore. The Terrace Regional Transit System offers a school special that leaves Caledonia Senior Second- ary every school day at 3:26 p.m. The school district has - been told it will be getting the same amount of money from the education mini- siry for transportation costs for the next three years.
