Hydro spent late last week reinforcing his pasi- lion. “If we go too far down the road to dismantling B.C. Hydro, there's’ no going back,” said. Paul Nettleton (Prince Gearge- Omineca). “And the cansequences are huge, not just for the leader or the party politic- ally, but tor the province as a whole.” Nettleton sent a seven- page ietter to his caucus colleagues and others Nov. 13, decrying what he calls “a strategy whose ultimate goal is the wholesale pri- vatization of? B.C. Hydro and the Liberal govern- ment’s “arrogance” and From Page A13 “ideological blindness.” He did so, he said, be- cause he didn't think he would get a fair hearing for his views within caucus or, indeed, from energy mini-. ster Richard Neufeld or Premier Gordon Campbell. Nettleton faced his cau- cus..colleagues Noy,.18 to. . defend his remarks, “He has very, very ser- icusly disappointed his colleagues,” said Fraser Valley MLA John Les last. week. “This isn’t “about what he did, Its about how he did it,” added Les of Net- tleton’s Widespread circu- lation of -his letter. “We don’t in our cau- cus discourage people from speaking their minds. In fact we even encourage people to’ vote against the B.C. Hydro not for sale government will “protect B.C. Hydro and all of its core assets, including dams, reservoirs and power lines under public owner- ship.” AH that doesn't mean there won't be some kind of change. News reports last week focussed on internal B.C. Hydro documents and sta- tements from Neufeld out- lining a possible separa- tion of B.C. Hydro’s trans- mission function from its power generation business, That’s viewed as a ne- cessary move to fit in with new Ametican regulations concerning cross-border sales of power. It could also open the way for new energy produ- cers to have access to publicly-owned power lines in much the same fashion as B.C. Hydro now enjoys all by itself. At the same time, B.C. Hydro is working on a deal to hive off its non-power and non-transmission -acti- vities to an offshore call centre operation. Neufeld said last week all will be revealed soon through a new provincial energy policy. It was scheduled to be released earlier this year but was delayed. B.C. information, a proud sponsor of.
