A volunteer from the museum arrived 10 days in a truck to pick up an unused Bristol Freighter engine be- longing to Hawkair. “We don’t have a sleeve-type engine such as this - where the piston is in a sleeve outside,” said the mu- seum’s Palmer Dahl. Bristol Freighters were operated for years by in the northwest by Trans Provincial Airways. When that company went out of business in the early 1990s, the Bristols and their parts went to a group of British pilots. One of them was eventually acquired by Hawkair and it was used by the company until it established its Dash 8-100 passenger service to Vancouver in 2000. Dah! said the museum has nearly 24 aircraft of all types on display and had wanted the Bristol itself. “But they don’t want to let that airplane po anywhere,” he said. Also of historical note is the volunteer who picked up the engine, says Hawkair’s Rod Hayward. George Williamson, now 81, was the first pilot to jand at the airport here after it was completed as part of the Second World War effart. “He arrived here Sept. 23, sixty years apo to the day when he was the first to land here in 1942,” said Hay- ward. .
