A2- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, July 31, 2002 MLA Harris says he’s in favour of Olympic bid By JEFF NAGEL CRITICS are too quick to condemn B.C.’s bid to land the 2010 Winter Olympics, says Skeena'’s MLA,. “I think that people are not recognizing the job po- tential that the Olympics would provide,” Roger Harris said. “It becomes a tremendous economic gen- erator in the province.” He said opponents are concentrating on the costs but not the benefits. “Iam very pro-Olym- pics. ] watched the Salt Lake City Olympics, Just about every TV in Terrace and Kitimat was on during that Olympics.” “T think before we kick it we should have a real good look at how it worked in Salt Lake City.” Although the province has commited only a small amount so far, some esti- mates suggest hosting the Olympics will easily top $5 or 6 billion. Victoria and Ottawa have already both pledged to put up $310 million each for new athletic ve- nues, and security costs could exceed $500 million. Bid organizers also want a $1.3 billion upgrade to the Sea-to-Sky highway from Vancouver to Whist- ler and a $1.4 billion rapid transit line from the airport to downtown Vancouver. Harris said major infra- structure spending — such as improving the Sea ta Sky Highway — would be required eventually any- way, Harris said. “A lot of the infrastruc- ture would have to be fixed up anyway in the not-too-distant future,” he © said, From front City hit s in gay a pride ; ._ ruling pride week proclamation by Victoria - something mayor Jack Talstra argued included Terrace — was simply an attempt by the mayor to “sidestep” the — request, the tribunal found. The tribunal rejected city claims it was threa- tened with legal action. The decision also criti- cized the city’s subsequent decision to stop issuing any proclamations in the aftermath of the gay pride debacle. The tribunal cited an expert witness who said that action sent the mes- sage the cancellation of proclamations for other groups is the fault of the ‘ gay community. “This community faces disadvantages in Terrace as a result of their sexual orientation,” the decision said, It pointed to the testim- ony of focal lesbian Maur- een Bostock that some gays and lesbians in Ter- race remain in the closet, fearing for their jobs, repu- tations, families and busi- nesses, “The fear of being ‘outed’ in Terrace is sa great that one requires the explicit permission of an individual before revealing that a particular individual is gay or lesbian,” the judgment said. A local gay man also described repeated har- rassment and name-calling when he went to school at Caledonia Sr. Secondary. - Council and the Rain- bow Committee must agree within two weeks on a mutually acceptable fu- ture date in June, July or August that will be pro- claimed “Lesbian Gay Bi- ‘sexual and Transgender -Pride Day”. If the two ‘sides can’t agree the tribu- “nal will decide the date. Harris also said that talk of placing a toll on the Sea to Sky Highway to pay for the upgrades “should be some consola- tion to us up here.” “The people using that road would be the ones paying for it over the long haul,” he said. He noted Ottawa might be kicking in as much as half of the costs of hosting the Olympics. “When you have that opportunity to get federal money to pay for 50 per cent of it may be a not bad business move,” he said. If it daes proceed, Har- ris said, the benefits must be spread far beyond Whistler and Vancouver. “It has to be a provin- cial experience — not a Whistler-Vancouver exper- ience,” Harris said. “Every region of the province has to have a way of participa. ting from the Olympic ex- perience and having a benefit from it.” He. said he understands the bid calls for a number of Olympic legacy pro- grams that would bring benefits to the regions. Harris said the Olym- pics would give B,C. an international audience, adding there’s good evi- dence it would boost tour- ism in subsequent years. “T think it is a good idea,” he said. Harris said he’s heard Chrysler Neon Chrysler Sebring CHRYSLER ——— = . from just one constituent who opposes B.C. hosting the Winter Olympics. NDP leader Joy Mac- Phail urged B.C.'s auditor general to analyze the B.C. Olympic bid before it’s submitted in January. That analysis wasn't scheduled to take place until next spring, She said the indepen- dent analysis must take place before B.C. commits billions of dollars. “For a province that is running the largest deficit in its history and is de- stroying the social safety | net to pay for it, we need to know that this is a good expenditure of public resources,” MacPhail said, Loase this vehicle for 8 month for 48 months.
