A12 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, July 29, 1998 Dumpster diver gets support & THINGS HAVE been look- ing up for Keith Olson, the man who was found taking discarded computer equip- ment out of the Northwest Community College’s dumpsters in June to restore and donate to the needy. The college has decided not to pursue charges against the unemployed computer consullant for removing the equipment. College president, Michael Hill, says if the col- lege had thought the equip- ment was usable it would have sought an alternative to throwing it out. “In this case, that was reviewed and we thought that it wasn’t feasible,”’ says Hill. He says the college has a good: history of donating outdated - technical equip- ment to the community and that college staff decided to "throw the computers out in this case because they were so outdated, The computers had been sitting, unused, in 8 warchousé for several years and were being cleared out to make storage space avail- able, says Hill. Térrace campus regional director, Peter Crompton, says: the computers were deemed unusable because they were old models which couldn’t ‘handle standard disks or. be attached to modems or mice. “In terms of computers, TERRY MCTAGUE and her two sons, Ben, 7, and Matthew Van Spransen, 5, will be getting one of the computers restored by Keith Olson this week. McTague, a single parent currently recelving welfare, says the computer will give her children a better epportunity to learn. them. He is surprised that Olson managed to get them to do anything useful. But Olson has been restor- ing computers for 14 years and says he specializes in the impossible. ‘Tm afraid I’m one of steadily since the public first read about his work to re- Store the equipment and make it available to charities and families in need.. “It’s mostly beent! people wanting computers,’ says Olson.
