slab race is all about.:The local couch potato, however, who be- lieves the old adage, “‘ignorance | is bliss’, is probably still idling - in his moth-eaten chair in com- _ plete bewilderment. 7 The confusion about this race. came from political debate. In a meeting of Terrace city council--. to be exact, who entered the race having no idea at all what they had done. And for the bewil- dered here is‘a brief description, of the event. . . As described by alderman. Danny Sheridan, each two-man team is given a pair of 2x4’s with four foot-straps and some ropes to hang on to. The idea is to slide one foot into each strap, hang on to.the rope, and “‘at- tempt’’ to move down the desig- . nated field and back while main- taining a certain level of dignity. Thornhill Volunteer Fire- fighters ‘“‘A’? Team did the best. job, they finished with top honors and Sheridan, . with the help of teammate Darryl Laurent, took second place. Sheridan claims the Thornhill - ‘A’? Team took advantage of the situation. They knew what a slab race was and had been practicing for weeks without telling anyone. But Sheridan and his partner may also have been a little underhanded. They were told there would be no testing and apparently showed up with” a “huge’’ bottle of vitamin pills disguised . as. steroids. When asked if this were true, Sheridan would only say that the pills didn’t do any good anyway so it didn’t matter. _ Another rumor, that Sheridan tried to dump Laurent fora ' > “TK blonde’ was also verified by Sheridan. But here again he said it: didn’t matter — organiz- ers wouldn’t let him do it any- -way. Other teams entered in the racé included..a couple from CFTK (one of which was appar- ently Sheridan’s: pick of. the day), the Thornhill Volunteer Firefighters .““B’’? Team and an- _other city-sponsored team, ‘‘The Administrators’’. Sheridan doesn’t seem too interested in the other teams anymore but. literally glows when he describes the folly of The Administrators — they were on the bottom of the list of .competitors almost ‘ before the event began, The Administrators, however, made up of Public Works’. Stew Christensen and Steve Scott from the city’s Parks and Recre- ation Department may be one up on Sheridan. Bureaucrats don’t have the same. urge to perform in the public arena and, as. explained by Christensen: ew committee shuffle - The Skeena Valley Fall Fair is -over.and'the curious and adven-. turesome have witnessed and _ discovered just exactly what:a - = * 1 Something new has been added to the 4600 block Lakelse. The Slab Race may not feature the prowess of Loggers’ Sports, but as.a Fall Fair event it’s a winner. Next year, though, it may be wise to throw in a few more rules... just for the politi- cians. — Brad Benson (above) stands beside one of three cylinder and pollshing machines where prescription lens blanks are prepared for deblocking and edging In his computer- controlled, same-day service eyeglass business.
