Aé - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 19, 2003 Dear Sir: For many weeks | Harry spurs the imagination CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD have been meaning to write-in in respanse. to , the original protest to the banning of Harry Potter ec in Christian Centennial, but biting my tongue and respecting the freedom of thought, I have kept quiet. However, it has finally be- came loo much. Maybe there is magic in Harry Potter. He has caused more commotion than the Gay Pride Day. All this over a bock? I assure you, Elizabeth Browne, that. Harry Potter was not meant to bring out evil in our children, On the contrary, it is meant for good, Just like any story it shows clear contrast between good and evil, but I do not believe you've read it, have you? Witcheraft is over rated, the only reason we still fear it Gt's the 2ist.century, people) is because we do not understand it, Let me tell you something about magic. It is not t real. Teen pregnancy is real, poverty is real, war, pollution, abuse, all of these things are real. So why don’t we spend the passion that went into writing these letters into fixing some of the things that are-real, instead of blud- reoning poor Harry with the stick of righteousness. I do understand the desire of the religious parents to keep their children away from the books. I also under- stand that these parents pay for their children’s schooling and therefore they-have the right to say what is going on at the Centennial Christian School. However, I do not understand the motives of thase who have no children, but still bash the book, Of course children will play princess and dragons, imitate fairy tales, what else will you have them play? Bible school? Crucifixion? If the kids today are so susceptible, then you should lock up your hammers, nails and two-by-fours. Who would you rather them imitate, Harry Potter and the dra- ton or Jesus on a cross. Children need something more Schools need money Dear Sir: in-The Terrace Standard of Feb, 12 there were no less than five diverse writers expressing concern about our provincial government's faulty education policies and their brutal underfunding, This is good because it is indicative of the common ground thal ail citizens in our community find them- selves on and it is good because these citizens are — speaking out, Purthermore, it is beneficial because it has yielded positive results. Last week the Liberals saw fit to bestow an additional $550,000 upon School District 82. As I write this letter it is unclear whether or not additional money promised for the public education system includes this sum or not. That money represents the first benefit. of speaking out and making our voices heard. It is only the first benefit, though, because there is still work to be done. That $550,000 represents only.10 per cent of the pro- jected district budget shortfall for next. year. We must continue to work together and advocate for our goal, a quality public education system for our students. Kids are surrounded by power and money hungry adults, Harry Potter brings in a wonderful rainbow of imagination into our children’s lives. To ban Harry Potter, is to ban imagination and creativity in our kids’ lives, Daisy McGriffin, Terrace, B.C. _ Take the wood away Dear Sir: - Mt. Veniez, as quoted in your ‘paper, wants to get more “partners” with him in the woods, He would make -us believe that he is just doing this because he likes us. But no businessman of his calibre does things like that. They do things to make a profit, and there is nothing - wrong with profit. But he is simply reselling a Crown asset and pockeling the money. If any- one makes a profit from selling Crown assets it must be the Crown (and Eord © knows, they need the money). What is wrong is that the timber te- nures he is selling, not giving but sell- ing, were never meant to be resold. or auctioned off, They were sold to him to be logged by him. He is now reselling the tenures and. all the responsibilities that he agreed to de. He is clearly not interested in. logging them. Since he is not interested in logging ‘the tenures given him by the Crown, the forestry must take them away from ’ him and reallocate. them to those who do wish to log — Hull, Main, Cutler, Houlden and the other solid working loggers of Terrace. © Better yet, give the tenures to the city and let them allocate cutting blocks, and: keep the stumpage.
