That is the essence of Pearson’s promise of ratification.” DISARM SAYS STEWART CP city secretary and can- didate in Vancouver South, William Stewart, addressed an all-candidate meeting this week at the _ Unitarian Church. He told the meeting that: “The first step towards dis- armament for Canada is to defeat the old line parties on June 18th.” Tracing the record of his party in the fight for peace, Stewart challenged any of the representatives to match the efforts of the Communists in Canada for a peaceful solu- tion of world problems. He chided the Liberal and Tory speakers who “tried to strike a peace posture, but who were the puppets on the end of strings manoeuvered by the big armaments manu- facturers and monopolies.” He reminded the audience that it was the Liberals who had introduced the policy of “integration with the USA and that both the Liberal and Tory governments had since that time run Canada with made-in-the-U.S. cold war policies. Stewart said that only a sharp break with these poli- cies and the pursuance of a policy of Canadian neutrality, withdrawal from NATO and NORAD, and trade with all countries would secure peace and ‘satisfy the economic s of Canadians. SS EGHATION BLASTED Speaking to a meeting of almost 100 people at the Elk’s Hall in Campbell River, Co- mox - Alberni CP candidate Mark Mosher lashed out aM the Tory-Liberal policy of in- tegration with the U.S. “Phis policy,” Mos her ‘ ft . wb oe ft Seals FP kon ee ee charged, “has deliberately driven up living costs and cut wages and farm income in order to subsidize the big U.S. monopolies. “Devaluation of the Can- adian dollar is the end result of the anti-Canadian, pro- U.S. policies of Liberal, Tory . and Socred governments. “By a stroke of the pen, recent wage gains have in most cases been stolen back, and for many, including pen- sioners and those on fixed in- come, drastically cut,” he said. The meeting, which was also addressed by CP pro- vincial leader Nigel Morgan, was notable for the large number of young people pres- ent. Citizenship rights must be guaranteed says Morris TORONTO “Citizen- ship in Canada is not yet really secure for many of our citizezns,’”’ Leslie Mor- ris, Communist candidate in Toronto-Trinity and the party’s national leader told a luncheon meeting of the Canadian Language Press Club and_ representatives of the Canadian Council of National Groups at the Town and Country Club on Tuesday, May 29. Candidates of all political parties were invited to speak to the Press Club on citizen- ship, but only Mr. Morris re- sponded to the invitation. “Citizenship should be a constitutional right for all who are born in Canada, have become naturalized, or who have resided in Canada for five years and wish to take advantage of that right,” said Mr. Morris. “It is a right, not a privi- lege, and parliament and gov- rnment should be deprived of any authority to interfere with it. A Bill of Rights should be embodied in a new Canadian constitution, made in Canada, and both constitu- tion and the Bill of Rights should be untouchable by parliament. Any amendments to a constitution or the Bill of Rights should be made only by a constitutional confer- ence.” “One of the central issues of this election is the preser- vation of Confederation, the survival of Canada as a state of English-speaking and French Canadians,” said Mr. Morris. “This is possible only through a new constitution which is founded on the na- tional equality of both Cana- dian nations, English and French, and the right of seces- sion. “If this is not done in the next few years, there is a possibility that confederation, will not survive. The unity of English and French Cana- dians within on state is a pro- gressive and desirable thing, but the present state cannot endure if French- Canada is deprived of the rights of full nationhood within that state,” said the speaker. “This is an issue not only for French Canadians, but for the residents of English Canada. It is a fact that there has grown up, in the condi- tions of national inequality for French Canada, a ruling English chauvinism, an“‘‘An- glo-Saxon” superiority which insults French Canadians and members of non-British im- migrants groups alike. “The right of citizenship, liberated from the prejudice of a Minister or a political police force, is linked with the larger issue of a really democratic constitution for Canada and a Bill of Rights,” the speaker concluded. U.S. tests menace earth warn Soviet scientists Soviet scientists this week expressed strong criticism of U.S. attempts to explode a nuclear device in space. The director of the Soviet Meteorological Institute, Pro- fessor Yevseyev said such nuclear explosions could “disturb” the inter-action between the upper layers of the atmosphere and solar energy. This may cause violent changes in the weather. A leading Soviet space biologist, Prof. Vasily Parin, said such nuclear shots would complicate the stay of future cos- monauts in space. Major Herman Titov described the tests as “a real act of sabotage”. WILL PAY TO BEARER ON DEMAND Aron Ta Ny USA-924 USA-92% MC fi) CANADA | (AY q ONE ONE y SICK DOLLAR S\ DOLLAR () + 4 U.
