a ||| for WALL STREET p } iS - has submitted to the Canadian people its new ve program: “Canadian Independence and Peo- : ple’s Democracy,” which is founded upon a policy of Peace, Independence and People’s Welfare. The LPP’s federal election appeal planks: A New National Policy to Make Canada Great 1 PEACE is the cardinal issue upon which ® everything depends. To achieve peace Canada must be disentangled from the NATO war alliance. An immediate cease-fire and exchange of prisoners of war in accord- ance with the 1949 Geneva Convention must end the Korean war. There must be no re- arming of the German Nazis and Japanese militarists. Canada must support a peace pact be- tween the Five Great Powers. She must stand for prohibition of atomic and bacteriological weapons of mass destruc- tion, the ending of the mad arms race. Canada must fight to restore the United Nations as a bulwark of world peace and cooperation in accordance with the UN Charter. DJ INDEPENDENCE of Canada must be restored. © Control of Canada’s economic, political and military -affairs must be vested in the Parliament of Canada which must be supreme. : Canada’s industries and natural resources must be wrested from the ‘grip of U.S. monopoly and developed to make our country strong and great. All U.S.-imposed restrictions on Canada’s foreign trade must be ended. We must develop reciprocal trade with Britain, the People’s Democracies of Europe, People’s China, the Soviet Union, with all countries that will deal on a fair and equal basis. All U.S. armed forces must be sent home from Canada. No military bases of the U.S. or any foreign power must be allowed in Canada. The armed forces of Canada must be commanded by Canadians. Canada’s sovereign Parliament must adopt a Cana- dian Constitution, Bill of Rights and National Flag— the symbols of democracy and national independence. <4 PEOPLE’S WELFARE must: become the guid- ® ing principle of our Parliament. Canada’s taxa- tion system must be radically revised to remove the oppressive burden of taxes from the common, people and transfer it, to the corporations, monopolies and the rich. \ National policy must serve to steadily increase the output of Canada’s industries and agriculture, to lighten the burden of labor, to constantly improve the economic and cultural conditions of the people. Parliament must establish a national health scheme to provide every Canadian with full medical and hospital service. National policy must serve to increase wages and prices paid to the farmers, to reduce consumer prices, to provide security from the cradle to the grave for all Canadians. Great public works, such as housing, prairie irriga- tion, hydro projects, hospitals, reforestation, must be ' pressed forward. Canada’s tremendous natural resources of oil, metals, coal, fisheriés, forests, land, water power and uranium must be harnessed to’ serve the needs of Canada’s people. The Labor-Progressive Party declares that a united Canadian people building upon the patriotic national policy of PEACE, INDEPENDENCE AND PEO- PLE’S WELFARE can defend the heritage of their forefathers and make Canada great! People's Unity for a People’s Parliament To secure these things, democratic Canadians must unite to break the stranglehold of the old-line parties on Parliament, and in their place elect a is based upon the following three . major People’s Majority to the House of Commons! The St. Laurent government is carrying through its policies of national betrayal with the active assistance of the Progressive-Con- servative Party, and of the CCF and Social Credit groups in the House of Commons. From the Atlantic to the Pacific—there is mass dissatisfaction with the Liberal-Tory war policies, and a deep-going desire for pol- icies of peace and independence. But the leaders of the CCF support the commitment of Canada to the NATO war alliance, which is leading to the sacrifice of social welfare, health and living standards. Only a new policy, a people’s policy of peace and independence, can meet the need and answer the desire of the vast majority of Canadians. j Around such a policy a new political align- ment, a people’s coalition of labor, farm and democratic forces generally, can and must be brought into being. This is the path to win- ning. a people’s majority and a People’s Parliament. Our Party is nominating a minimum of 70 to 80 candidates to bring this New Na- tional Policy to the people all across Canada. We will fight for this Program, and for votes for our candidates, with the aim of arousing democratic Canadians to the neces- sity for Labor and People’s Unity. We urge trade unionists who favor labor political ac- tion, CCF supporters who see the need for a new policy, farmers who recognize the need for cooperation between democratic people of town and country, and middle class people who have lost faith in the old line parties, to assert” their opinions and pool their forces in every constituency to obtain unity around candidates committed to peace, democracy and independence. The LPP will join hands in all. such popular efforts for unity. It is-our convic- tion. that to change the course of the present betrayal of Canada will require the action of the masses, of the people, and of labor, CCF and farm organizations.- Against St. Laurent’s policy of selling our oo This is Wall Street where may be found head offices for many of the biggest cor- porations set up to plunder Canada’s xat- ural resources. country to the United States the Labor-Pro- gressive Party calls for People’s Action— Canada for the-People of Canada!
