A12- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 23 GRIZZLY BEARS should be targets of conservation- ists as well as hunters in the limited entry lottery, says a local biologist. FROM FRONT Bear report swept away library in Victoria. But it didn’t stay there forJong as ministry officials soon recalled the report from all but a few top decision makers. Nancy Bircher, the ministry director of wildlife manage- ent said it should have begn sent only to policy makers because that’s what the report essentially criticized. “He may not have had a good idea as to who it should be sent to,”’ said Nancy Bircher, director of Wildlife manage- ment in Victoria. i She said the report’s details would eventually be publicly discussed, But first, management will need time to review ils content, oS The report builds on de Leeuw’s March 1997 report which alleged management officials who hunt create « biased policies. Bircher said both reports are based on in- ' accurate details. * ‘We question some of the facts,’’ she said. ‘We don’t 4 know what led him to those details,” * But Paul George of the Western Canada Wilderness * Committee (WCWC) disagrees. *» ‘t's a well thought out report that says ministry meth- ods are flawed and gives us alternalives,’’ he said Friday, calling the report courageous and intelligent, The report validates WCWC’s claim that real grizzly populations in B.C. are about half of provincial estimates of 13,000 bears, ; 3 PaaS RL a a a rt When questioned about the report, de Leeuw said he’d been told not to talk to the media and that any questions should be referred to his superiors. Bircher didn’t know if de Leeuw was disciplined for writing or distributing the report but she did say the report was discussed with him. And, she said, his future ideas would be accepted by the ministry. ‘‘If he has an idea he’s certainly welcome to share it,’’ she said. i . . , 7 ; . ; "with this coupon: "™".™ with this coupon; ™ valid only af participeting Dairy Quen stor. Steve Scott said exact components are still being determined by the advisory design commitice, but they tentatively include a 250- seat drama theatre. A second shect of ice, gymnasium space, and a range of facilities and space for other activities is also in the plans. The second sheet of ice is to be located on the north side of the existing arena, while the other multiplex compenents are ta go be- tween the arena and the aquatic centre. The end result, says Scott, will be a combined entrance/lobby area for ail recreation facilities. A third and final open house to present the final recommendation is to be held Thursday, Oct. 1 at the arena from 2 to 9 p.m. Scott said the commiltce wants to discuss the theatre idea further with Terrace Little Theatre, which instead of building a new theatre themselves might contribute moncy to the multiplex. Other issues still to be resolved, he said, include determining whether items such as a climbing wall are likely to be well used for - many years, Scott said the committec and hired consultants have’ been preparing the design based on public input from two previous open houses and interviews with numerous local visual and performing aris groups, sports organizations and so- cial groups. “Much of the facility will be multi-functional to allow“ a wide range of possible uses,’ Scott said, There will also be dedi- cated space for youth, the arts, social functions and sports groups, he said. 7 MMM oenn-an. _ ?
