_Nobody’s in danger An apen letter to ’ the community: A tecent decision by "government services ministry to shut down Government Air has raised some concems that air am- bulance in the province might ‘somehow be affected or that patients in British Columbia will be placed in medical jeopardy. -.- T would like to assure all British Columbians. that patient safety ~ will--not -be- jeopardized. The . closure of Government Air Ser- . Viees (GAS) offers the op- portunity fo position aircraft and - paramedics in more suitable loca- . tions, which will enhance, not ~ degrade the service. A Victoria air ambulance _| paramedic station was developed » because of the location of govern- Ment aircraft, not because there - were more calls in Victoria than - the rest of the province. _ Private charter companies are being used for the majority of air ambulance work (up to 65 per cent). The closure of GAS will .. therefore not impact on the opera- a a the CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag tion of BCAS, as private charter companies are already in place, and well used to the rigors and procedures regarding ambulance air cvacuations, .They have been doing an ex- cellent job, offering ‘a top quality service, Operating and training standards are in place and are closely monitored by government qualily assurance staff. As well, we anticipate a major cost savings by fully utilizing the private charters. Currently, the cost per mile for GAS is almost double what the private charter companics charge, which will mean a significant cost savings to the taxpayers of this province. We will also establish three satellite stations in the province where air ambulances will be dis- patched from, which means moving the services closer to the people who need them. For exam- ple, rather that dispatching a plane from Victoria to the north, there will be a base in Prince George for northern air evacua- tions. ; While this change does mean that up to four paramedics may have to be relocaied from Vic- toria, there will be no lay offs or cutbacks, The services of BCAS will be enhanced and far more cost effective, and will not have any negative impact on those needing emergency service. | Sincerely yours, R.P, (Val) Pattec, Executive Director, B.C, Ambulance Service, Ministry of Health Tire changer commended | Dear Sirs A resident of your community ~; has been instrumental in restoring - my faith in the next generation of adults. On June 30, we needed a tire repaired while travelling. The . time was five minutes before closing at the Esso service station “on Lakelse Avenue. This fact was of no concern to the young man who came to our aid. He was willing to patch the tire and put it on our vehicle in place of the spare tire that my husband had installed on the road and he did all this with confidence and enthusiasm even though our vehicle was covered in mud from the Stewart-Cassiar Highway. Needless to say, we were more than pleased to find such caper- ness to provide top quality ser- vice. He is to be commended.
