The telephone rang in Station 14, Constable Dylan Porter picked up the phone with one hand, while the other hand tried to shuffle his paperwork singlehandedly. A familtar voice spoke Hey, Dylan baby, is this a good time to talk? Constable Dylan Porter put down his papers and settled down to talk to his favorite inform- ant. Marshall was the best in the business. He always came across with the goods. . Yeah, Marshall, always a great time to talk with you. Marshall whispered into the phone. Dylan had to strain to get the details. Listen, cant talk loud, dont want the guys in the poolroom to cateli on. Just gota hot tip. Willy Norbert is leaving on the ferry today to pick up some drugs on the mainjand and is coming back tonight to the island Keep a close watch on this guy. Hes going to be driv- ing a white GM 4.x 4. And a great looking blond is going to be sitting next to him. . Constable Dylan hung up.the phone and Started barking out orders. This is a big one, guys, dont muck up, Weve been trying to pin something on Willy for over a year. This is our big chance. Get him. That evening, Willy and Sally, and his gor- geous blond girlfriend were, sitting in his white 4 x 4 on the ferry waiting to drive off the ferry. Sally poked Willy, Willy, Im scared. Ive been hearing voices. The cops are out to get us. Will looked annoyed. Sally, those voices are going to drive you crazy one day, Theyre beginning to drive me nuts, Nothing is going to happen. Nothing. Nobody knows that why we went to the main- land. Aad if they dont know nothing, they cant do nothing. Drug Pusher You BE THE JUDGE BY CLAIRE BERNSTEIN BASED ON ACTUAL COURT CASES Just as Willy and Sally drove carefully off the ferry, their 4 x 4 was surrounded by police cars. Sorry sir, but were going to have to search your car. The police found the drugs and arrested Willy and his girlfriend. Willy fought them tooth and nail. Willy stated his case, Your Honour, the officers had no right to search my car. I was not driving in a suspicious manner. There was no odour of drugs. The officers didnt have a search warrant. Almost everyone returns to the province by ferry. The charges arent valid. If they hadnt séarched my car, they woukint have found the drugs. Dylan testified, Your Honour, I was acting on a tip from an informant, I didnt have enough evidence to get a search warrant until Tsaw Willy leaving the ferry, If I went to get one, he wouldve gotten away. The law says that a police officer can search any place when theres good reason to believe a crime is taking place. Was the car illegally searched? You! Be The Judge.
